Moderator Johanna Posted October 31, 2008 Moderator Report Posted October 31, 2008 I finally found a bolt action shotgun for Wade, only it's a 16 gauge, not a 20. It has a choke on the end to control the shot spray, and seems to be in good condition. Anybody know anything about this gun, what's a reasonable price and how old is it? I'm not finding much on the net, I guess Mossberg discontinued the bolt action a long time ago? I know there is more gun expertise here than anywhere...don't let me get taken by the dealer! Thanks Johanna Quote
Contributing Member rdb Posted October 31, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted October 31, 2008 Which model is it? Mossberg made a lot of bolt shotguns over the years, including single shot, choked, not choked, slug, and multiples. What does he want to use it for? I think we need a bit more info... Quote
Moderator Johanna Posted October 31, 2008 Author Moderator Report Posted October 31, 2008 3 in the clip and one in the chamber, has a choke. Model 190. Does that mean anything? ~J Quote
Contributing Member rdb Posted October 31, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted October 31, 2008 (edited) I'd say about a hundred bucks tops, unless it was mint, and I mean mint . It's sort of a collectible, but not rare. That 16 gauge without a modern butt pad is gonna leave blue marks, that's for sure.. Edited October 31, 2008 by rdb Quote
Members TexasJack Posted October 31, 2008 Members Report Posted October 31, 2008 Mossberg made a 10 gauge version that was very, very popular on the Gulf Coast for goose hunting. Kicked like a mule, but could really put some lead in the air. 12 gauge magnums (3 1/2 in.) put a real dent in 10 gauge sales. 16 gauge is a great size. It's too bad that it's nearly been wiped out with the popularity of 20 and 12. I've got an old single shot 16 that's probably too old for modern ammo. It has an extremely long barrel and was supposed to be pretty good for squirrel hunting. According to Fjestad's Blue Book, the following bolt actions were in 16 g. Models 190, 190D, 190K - 1955-58 - Top value: $125 (excellent, 100% condition) Models 390, 390K, 490A - 1971-1976 Top value: $125 Quote
superchute Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 (edited) why a bolt action and why not a pump ? I love my winchester 120 and thay should be in the 100 bucks range. most places the 12 gauge shells are better priced Russ Edited October 31, 2008 by superchute Quote
Members Randy Cornelius Posted October 31, 2008 Members Report Posted October 31, 2008 To find out what a gun is really worth, you have to find what someone is willing to give. Try the gun aution sites to find one like that and just see what it goes for. Try www.gunbroker.com they sell a lot of guns and I have done business with them as a buyer and seller. Randy Quote
Members oddball Posted November 1, 2008 Members Report Posted November 1, 2008 The 16 is good but take a look at your local sporting shops and see what they carry for 16 Ga. shells if they don't carry the shells you want I would suggest keep looking for a 20. Quote
