Hello, I have been making belts for some time but recently made a dog collar, looked good at first but after a but if wear, getting wet etc. it has lost its initial good looks.

I use veg tan leather from zack white, feibings oil dye and had put carnauba cream on it.

I have just got some neatsfoot oil and would like to know best practice to make better quality dog collars.

Should I apply neatsfoot oil first, then dye etc and finish again with the oil? Can I use carnauba cream to finish or both?

Also I put tan Kote on reverse, what do people recommend?

If it is good new leather case (wet) leather stamp or tool leather put light coat of neatsfoot on let it sat overnight dye to color put resist on in two or three light coats (most is mixed 50/50 with water) to seal leather install hardware.

I don't have any resist and I want to dye it black, would this be ok? What does the resist do?

I have changed to dyeing first and then apply NF. I was running into dark spots along the edges if I oiled first and then dried. Always waited to next day and leather was hung high to dry. Now the color is more even.

"Resist" is a sealer of the leather. Terminology is used when doing multiple colors close together or when you dye something. We mix an acrylic sealer with water to seal in the dye. This "resists" the dye from getting on clothes. A lot of us use a floor shine product. Mop & Glo is the name or something like it. Heck of a lot cheaper than Resolene, Satin Sheen, or other "Sheens" .

I would recommend you do a search here for more information for dog collars. I recall a number of posts dealing with problems including dye rub off, stretching, loosing definition, etc. Especially for dogs that go swimming!
