Members MikeDB Posted November 23, 2008 Members Report Posted November 23, 2008 A large EDC Sir! I was asked to make a copy of a scabbard for an arming sword. Circa 1300 with an integrated sword belt (not seen much after 1350) It's taken me a while but it's nearly done. Cuir bouilli central core, calfskin over wrap and a wet formed hide outer. I'll replace the pictures when I talk the camera into a better mood. Cheers Mike Quote
Contributing Member UKRay Posted November 23, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted November 23, 2008 Fabulous job. It looks better than many museum exhibits I've seen... Quote "Some mornings, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps" Ray Hatley www.barefootleather.co.uk

Members MikeDB Posted November 24, 2008 Author Members Report Posted November 24, 2008 My thanks for the kind words. I should add that the belt shown is not the final one. It's doing a fine job holding open the suspension loops until a final design has been agreed with the commissioner. Cheers Mike Quote
Members MikeDB Posted November 26, 2008 Author Members Report Posted November 26, 2008 A final decision on the belt suspension & some better pictures hopefully :D Thanks all for your kind comments Cheers Mike Quote
Members Daggrim Posted November 26, 2008 Members Report Posted November 26, 2008 Wow, that detail work on the complex way the straps all intertwine, and how the lacing is so well integrated is amazing. Looks like you spent many hours just figuring out how to integrate all that overlapping into a coherent design. What'd you use to get that satiny finish? Daggrim Quote
MADMAX22 Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 I agree that is a nice finish and great job on this one. When I first saw the pics thought it looked like some real nice latigo allmost. Very well done. Quote
TomSwede Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 It is a very beautiful scabbard!! I can just imagine the sewing of that back. Outstanding! Daggrim Historically it's accurate up until the mid 1300's then it lost favour to direct attachment to a girdle belt. It does take some working though as the straps not only intertwine but also run through the outer scabbard leather under the second part of the sword belt. The finish on this one is done with layers of different colour dye then different colour wax and finally a few coats of carnauba. I agree that is a nice finish and great job on this one. Members MHolzer Posted July 25, 2009 Members Report Posted July 25, 2009 by any chance, do you have a shot of the tip? I'm interested in seeing how you finished that part It really is a beautiful piece by the way! Quote 1.
