noisy fan

I may not be with you for awhile. So if I suddenly disapear you know what happened. PC pooped out. I'm unhappy about it but what can ya do? I'm thinking about going Macbook anyway. It's a compaq Presario F700 notebook. I let it cool down so it's working ok now. Well wish me luck. Hey, maybe it was just a one time thing. Later

will do. My nephew said it might be the usb hub I'm using. He said to get one that is not powered by the pc because it draws alot of power. Get one that runs off a AC plug and that might help some. I have alot plugged into ithe hub.

tom, are u using a tower or laptop...if it is a tower it is worth taking the side off and checking the cpu fan...i found mine was clogged with dust, fluff, doghair!! blow it out with an air compressor or can of compressed air or just use a soft paint brush to clear the fan...while you have it open it is worth peeling off the little sticker in the middle of the fan and putting a few drops of machine oil in..this will keep the fan quiet. Another problem can be a clogged power supply fan, this is the fan at the back of the tower..u can get at this by undoing a few screws...you have to get the power supply out and take the cover off to get to the fan...clean, oil and replace.....very quiet now!!!! and pc will run much much cooler.

OK, just read your post again...i see you are using a laptop...oh well, maybe this will help some one else.

New fan units are cheap and easy to replace. Just make sure you get one with a bearing and not just a bush. Probably $25 at the most. If I can replace one, anyone can!

A new fan for a desktop is less than $7, and I have seen people fry their several hundred dollar processors because they didn't replace a fan they could HEAR was going bad. Changing a fan in a laptop is a little more complicated, but it still boils down to a screwdriver and some heat sink. It's a cheap investment if the computer is important to you.

Thanks guys, and gals. It's not making any noise now but I did go and get one of those chill pads to set the notebook on. You can hear the little fan running quietly in the background but the laptop is cool as cucumber. Not really sure how cool cucumbers get but this thing is doing good. Now.

Hey Tom as others have mentioned it is a really good idea to clean the little buggers out. I havnt messed with lappy's very much but did take a couple of friends lappys apart and they were horribly full of dust and dirt and what not. The thing with lappys is they have some really small screws but anyone with enough patience to work with leather can tackle it relatively easy.

Your right about that Max. I live out on a dirt road and it gets pretty bad. Guess I need to break out the airbrush compressor and use it to air out the bottom of this thing.
