UKRay Report post Posted December 2, 2008 I took a few pictures of the leatherwork booths at the annual Medieval Fayre held inside Ludlow Castle this weekend. There was some lovely stuff on display and I came away with plenty of good ideas for next season. The hobby horses were made of leather with a goatskin mane and looked superb - the picture doesn't do them justice. The guy selling the games had a huge range of games with leather playing boards that rolled up and went inside tubes along with the playing pieces. Does anywhere else have this kind of event? DavidG Report post Posted December 2, 2008 There's a very small summer medieval faire nearby, but most events of this period are held by the SCA. Other than the SCA and a couple of Norse groups you mainly see Renaissance Festivals on this side of the pond. Great photos! I wish I could have been there. carr52 Report post Posted December 2, 2008 I agree with DavidG, great pics. They have some nice looking stuff. I particulary like the bags and drinking vessels. I'm gonna have to try my hand at that. Thanks David, I should have said does anywhere else have this sort of CHRISTMAS event but somehow 'twixt brain and fingers there was a glitch... It was very atmospheric being inside the castle at an event like this but it was absolutely freezing cold. Those old stone walls really draw the heat out of you! tashabear Report post Posted December 2, 2008 We don't have a Christmas event like that, and obviously no castles, but the SCA group north of me has a merchanting event at the end of January called "A Market Day at Birka." It's been going for nearly 20 years now, and I understand it's the largest one-day event in the SCA, drawing nearly 3000 people. It'll be my first event as a merchant -- I have a lot of work to do! Hope you are feeling better - you would have been really sick if you had stood around in the cold at that castle all day... The lady on the leather bottle stand was absolutely freezing - t'was not much fun for her I think. Tom, you would be very welcome in Ludlow - just let me know when you are coming. I'll pick you up at Birmingham airport! Didn't see any glass or plastic liners but I did see a pottery bottle liner that looked excellent and very much like a period item. Most impressive use of materials - I just wish I had got a picture of it but the guy had it full of hot punch and was using it as an alcoholic hot water bottle inside his shirt. Brilliant idea IMHO! ferret Report post Posted December 3, 2008 Ray there is the 800th anniversary King John charter christmas fayre , St Nicholas Church Great Yarmouth 28-30 November 2008. Don't know if there will be any re-enactment/leather stalls though. Tom If you're coming over July 11-12 would probably be the best time, Tewkesbury's annual battle re-enactment with hundreds of traders (and a beer tent with some great brews) and 5000 idiots hitting each other with large lumps of metal.
