Members James1983 Posted October 1, 2015 Members Report Posted October 1, 2015 I recently bought a splitter off the tandy outlet supply site, req $899 got it for around $250. Every time I got to split leather it carves out the centre of my piece and the outer edges are the thickness i wanted. I have tried in several locations across the 8" blade so I know its flat and not a bent blade. Has anyone had this happen to them, could it be my technique or did I buy a lemmon tool. I have posted some pics of the splitter and what its doing. Thank you for your assistance. James Newbie Quote
electrathon Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 Looks like a bent blade, it is common. Even normal. Remove your blade and color the cutting edge AND THE BACK of the blade with a sharpie. Spray glue a piece of at least 600, preferably finer grit, wet/dry sandpaper to a piece of glass. Carefully sand both cutting edge and the back of the blade with a circular motion, keeping the paper wet. You will quickly see where it is warped. I don't think I have seen a straight blade when I have sharpened one yet. Quote
stelmackr Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 I can't tell, but if the leather is chrome tanned, then I would say that a hand held splitter might not work as well for you. My guess is that you are pulling the outside edges. Try pulling the center and see if it gouges out the outside edges. Then try with some firmer vegetable tanned leather. I might be all wet and it won't be the first time. Bob Stelmack Quote
Members Mrvista Posted October 18, 2015 Members Report Posted October 18, 2015 Are you trying to take off too much leather in one hit? If you do this you can distort the leather and get an uneven skive. Try taking off less, and see if that's the problem. If it's not then try Electrathons tip. Quote
