Members 9tpi Posted October 29, 2015 Members Report Posted October 29, 2015 Hello everyone, My next project is a ladies bucket bag as requested by my better half. The bag will be hand sewn with 632 Fil au chinois lin cable in black Black Horween Essex, 4oz Brass hardware Lined Just got started last night, but personally I like seeing the progression of people's projects, so here is mine. Thanks for looking Chris Quote
Members 25b Posted October 29, 2015 Members Report Posted October 29, 2015 How much of the strap did you fold over the d-ring and down behind the strap? How are you going to finish the top edge? Fold over or sew a binding over it? Quote
Members 9tpi Posted October 29, 2015 Author Members Report Posted October 29, 2015 I have about 1-1/4 folded over and skived down at the end to lay flat. yes i will be finishing the top edge but I still have to add a strip around the inside. Both exposed edges will be burnished and edge painted etc. Quote

Members MonicaJacobson Posted November 5, 2015 Members Report Posted November 5, 2015 Cool, looks like it's going to be a nice bag. Quote
Members 9tpi Posted November 5, 2015 Author Members Report Posted November 5, 2015 Small update, Bottom is sewn on the bag with piping. Next will be lining the interior (with phone and zippered pockets) and installation of grommets for the "drawstring" Chris Cool, looks like it's going to be a nice bag. Thanks Monica! Fingers crossed lol Quote
Members lilwaysleather Posted November 5, 2015 Members Report Posted November 5, 2015 Haven't done any piping yet. Did you put some type of wire or tube in between the leather for it or just folded the piece of leather on its own. Lookin good Quote
Members 9tpi Posted November 5, 2015 Author Members Report Posted November 5, 2015 lilways, this particular bag is just the leather folded over onto itself. How you place the piping on the bag and where you stitch in relation to it is what gives the illusion of it being cylindrical (as if tube or wire are inside). Personally I don't like anything synthetic (tube, wire, polyester etc) inside my work. I just feel synthetics won't age the way the natural materials do; My own preference. Quote

Members 9tpi Posted November 26, 2015 Author Members Report Posted November 26, 2015 A bit of an update; The body of the bag is assembled with lining, zippered pocket and iphone pouch (not pictured) as requested by my better half. Need to finish the edge on the top of the bag. Shoulder strap and handle still left to make. May redo the "draw string" as there is a bit of interference through the eyelets. Thanks for looking. What's your plan for the edge? Thanks! Nothing crazy planned for the edge. Just burnish, sand, edge-coat, and a bit of wax. I just didn't have time last night. Awesome~ I love how you do the lower construction! Thanks very much. Quote

Members DavidL Posted November 27, 2015 Members Report Posted November 27, 2015 How you place the piping on the bag and where you stitch in relation to it is what gives the illusion of it being cylindrical (as if tube or wire are inside). Do you mind elaborating on this? Im assuming the closer to the fold of the piping you stitch the more rounded it gets? What distance did you settle on to stitch the piping (4 oz leather piping?) When you stitch the piping and panel parts together how much leather is inside (that you dont see) if that makes sense? Quote

When you stitch the piping and panel parts together how much leather is inside (that you dont see) if that makes sense? Hi David, the piping; I usually mark the distance of my stitch line equal to the thickness of the piping. For example,4 oz folded over onto it self (8oz) is equal to 1/8 of an inch. Therefore I mark my stitch line 1/8 in on the piping. Inside the bag there is a larges excess that I later trim prior to turn the bag right side out. Nice work. Your attention to detail is superb. thank you very much !Nice work. Your attention to detail is superb. thank you very much ! Quote

Members skylerbarger Posted December 4, 2015 Members Report Posted December 4, 2015 (edited) I loved the piping, what is that technique? Did you use that to make the edges, where they meet, disappear? The whole bag turned out wonderful. Edited December 4, 2015 by skylerbarger Quote
