Lostranger Report post Posted November 24, 2015 I need a medium duty/patching stitcher I have an opportunity to buy a Singer 17U141 for what may be a decent price. Can anyone give me perspective on this stitcher? It's three hours away, and the fellow is not able to send photos. Claims that it's in good working condition. At what price is it worth a 6 hour trip to check it out? What can this machine do? Can I get parts? Any particular strengths or weaknesses? Constabulary Report post Posted November 24, 2015 "U" Suffix machine were made in Japan AFAIK but thats nothing bad. The17 Class machines have very tiny bobbins approx the size of the 29K bobbins. I´d rather consider them as light duty machines. Though the 17 Class I once owned (from the early 1900´s) was able to sew with 138 thread but 69 thread is what it works best with I´d say. Many of them came with roller feet. Price depends on condition, accessories, motor and so forth, some pictures would be nice to see.
Wizcrafts Report post Posted November 24, 2015 I did a quick lookup of this model and sub-class. It looks like a light duty, straight stitch machine. It should be usable for upholstery and garment leather. The feed is entirely from the feed dog on the bottom. I suppose that the presser foot could be changed to a roller foot, if someone offers a compatible foot for sale.
Lostranger Report post Posted November 24, 2015 Thanks for the help. I believe I'll hold out for that Pfaff 335 that I've not yet found and can't yet afford.
