Making dog collar ?

Hey guys Ive been tasked with making a dog collar for christmas present. Pretty straight forward Im using a latigo strap, some spikes and emerald inlay type rivets and some other rivets. Ill put a layer of vegtan on the inside to cover up the rivet ends and make a nice smooth color then seal it up.

Its for a big ol dog so strength is all important.

Now for the question, I understand how to cut the holes and slot for the buckle and the chicago screws or rivits to hold the end together. Now for the D-ring, does that get attached inbetween a couple of the chicago screws and thats it or do you need to sew it in to keep it from moving around.

I know for keepers on a belt ya can just put them inbetween the screws and your good to go. But with the d-ring thats gonna have the leash pulling on it and such is there another method thats recommended.

Max, the first pic is some of the style of collars I used to make, but now I find that putting the keeper right below the buckle, then rivets, then your d-ring, then rivets works better. That's how I did it in the second picture - unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of it unbuckled.

The D ring on this one is on the end. The dogs owner wants it in the middle on the new one. This picture doesn't show the whole collar. The new one is 32 inchs. Big dog.

Trouble with the 'D' being in the middle is that the buckle ends up at the throat - not too comfortable, I'd think

I read somewhere here that some dogs might be allergic to veg.tan leather and you should not have it closest to their bodys...Check this one out just to be sure.

Thanks Tina, I didnt know that and well worth the not using it then. I may have to line it with some chrome tan or something.

I got the dog collar done and traded it for this big piece of granite. It's 30 inchs long and 16 inchs wide.

Thats cool as all heck. That would be perfect to inlay into the bench if you could swing it.

The guy came back and brought me another one of them so now I have 2 of them. I like the inlay idea.
