TCon Report post Posted February 3, 2016 I'm looking for 0.2 oz veg tanned leather. Tandy Leather does not really have 0.2 oz thickness, at least not any good selections. The best I can find is about 0.4 oz, which is far too thick for the inner pockets of a wallet (what I'm trying to make). Does anyone have any suggestions of where to look? TinkerTailor Report post Posted February 3, 2016 I think you are looking for 2oz, not 0.2. ).2oz is the thickness of paper.... Try some of the other suppliers advertising on the top of the page. Tandy is not known for the best leather at the lowest prices...Or good selection. LumpenDoodle2 Report post Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) Do you have a bookbinder supplier near you? They usually stock (approx) 0.8-1mm leather. I am fortunate in having J Hewit & Son 5 minutes down the road from me. I have been able to buy lovely fine veg tan leather scraps from them. TCon Report post Posted February 3, 2016 Oh, of course, I was not thinking correctly. I mean 2 oz. I think I was getting it confused with .08 mm, which is a different measurement. grmnsplx Report post Posted February 3, 2016 I just purchased some veg sheepskin (1.5-2.5oz) from tandy. I intend to use them for wallet interiors. I am not sure how well these will work though. It's more of an experiment. Tandy gets mixed lots of goatskins in every now and then. In the mix are a few veg skins. Keep your eye out for those. Be prepared to pay more for bookbinding leathers because bookbinders want impeccable hide. I could ask them to split it to 2 oz, correct? While it may seem cheap, look at the shipping and possibly duty. There are several places in the US that can supply you with the leather you need. There are very few people on here that have used the italian leathers, while most have used hermann oak, w&c and horween. There are many options available to have leather split at the retailers of these leathers in the US, as well some of the tannerys will sell direct and split it as well. I should say i don't have as much experience in the US market as some, being a Canadian, I should also say that i have a local supplier in canada for italian veg and it is amazing stuff. Especially if all you have seen is tandy. Btw, I get real tuscan veg locally for the same price as tandy florence shoulders tanned in mexico...... However, as a beginner, I really don't want to invest that kind of money (upper $300 range it appears) until I've practiced enough to feel confident to use that high quality stuff from Maverick. Depending on the leather, you'll want them to sand and repaste the backs, but that doesn't add substantially to the price. The best part is that they have no minimums.
