Fiebings Black Oil Dye Or Regular Fiebings Dye?

Recommended Posts

I have been making some black leather straps for several months now and I first used fiebing black dye, but the last few I used fiebings black oil dye because I have read that it is better. I admit that it seemed to go a lot further than the regular black dye but now that the product is finished it seems to me that the regular dye produces a much richer and blacker color. Has anyone else noticed this also?

For larger areas I always use the pro, as the regular black leaves a purple tint that is visible from certain angles. However for smaller areas or rough areas that needs color in - like when coloring hand tooled patterns, I use the ordinary one as it dries almost instant. The pro oil needs to be left to dry properly, preferably over night, to give proper lasting results. Don't forget to buff the surface when it's dry, to pick up all the residue dye that is coating the surface as a fine powder, as this will color clothes and everything else it gets in contact with.

Thanks for the response. The straps that I am doing have basket weave pretty much on the whole thing so I'm going to go back to the regular dye. Just looks a whole lot better to me

Barkster, . . . through experimentation, . . . I've found that THE best black dye job I can get comes from the Pro Oil dye, . . .

BUT, . . . I cut it 1 to 1 with thinner.

I also dip dye, . . . into the pan it goes, . . . maybe 3 seconds or so, . . . pull it out, . . . shake off the excess, . . . lay out to dry.

I found by thinning it, . . . it does not affect the color, . . . but the excess pigment ruboff and buffing is MUCH less, quicker, and easier.

May God bless,

Dwight

I have always used the pro. I get no streaking with it.
