Hello folks, been a lurker, first post with a question...

I've noticed bifold/bill folds always have an unstitched gap in the middle of the note pocket (where the wallet folds).

Is this a design trait or does it serve a functional purpose?

I'm planning on making one as a gift and figured I should make sure before making a catastrophic mistake.

I've just made one for my husband, very first project, and when I designed my pattern, I purposely cut the inside piece of leather 1cm smaller than the outside. Then I left 2 cm unstitched in the center fold. The reason being, it's the only way of getting a good fold as the shorter inside 'pulls' the wallet naturally to it's finished shape.

If you were to use two pieces of the exact same length, after stitching the two layers would attempt to 'pucker' as the bifold is folded. The thickness of the leather wouldn't allow folding without that small unsewn space that 'gives'. Being leather, instead of puckering, it would pull the stitching and just not hold a good shape. It wouldn't 'lay' right.

I don't know if I've explained properly though 😊

BeUnico, thank you. That's what I suspected. I'll have to see if there are any old billfolds laying around the house to take apart for research purposes.

I think I've got a way to avoid the puckering issue altogether, nothing groundbreaking I'm sure.

Will post when I have a finished product.

Sorry for the threadjack lilwaysleather!
