Stewart Report post Posted March 29, 2016 (edited) I started making the for my G/kids and their cousins. You would think the sewing would get better but it's going backwards. Left needle goes through first and right needle goes toward left under. Or it's just me whith built in flaws. The name Luke is for reference. Tugadude Report post Posted March 29, 2016 First of all, I'm sure your family will treasure them! On the stitching, you had a couple spots where the threads crossed the wrong way, resulting in a dropped stitch. When those happen, and they happen to us all, simply undo back to that point and make sure to observe the proper form. Keep your eyes on both sides as you are stitching and do it under good lighting. When this happens to me is when I rush and accidentally grab the first needle from above as I form a cross. I start from the right side, holes slanting down towards me if possible. As the first needle passes through, I grab it with the left, crossing the needles, LH needle underneath. Rotate your wrist and run the LH needle through the bottom of the hole. I sometimes cast a knot, depending upon the thickness of the leather. Helps to achieve a slant. Pay close attention to your tension, making sure it is even, snug but not overly tight. what method are you using to make your holes?
Stewart Report post Posted March 29, 2016 I am using a sewing Awl. I do the opposite RH underneath on the right side. Thank you for your comment.
SaltyD0gg Report post Posted March 29, 2016 Pick up a set of diamond punches instead of the awl, you'll love life!
Tugadude Report post Posted March 29, 2016 Agree, even an inexpensive Craftpro chisel from Tandy will work wonders.
Tugadude Report post Posted March 29, 2016 Sorry, Craftool, not Craftpro...
Tugadude Report post Posted March 29, 2016 (edited) Get a 6 or 4 and a matching 2 prong. The 6 or 4 for long, straight runs and the 2 goes around corners a dream. If you haven't watched them, Nigel Armitage's youtube videos on chisels are very helpful. Edited March 29, 2016 by Tugadude
TheModifier Report post Posted March 30, 2016 (edited) Luke, I have found this video extremely valuable: Nigel is a member here as well and chimes in from time to time, a great guy. Dangerous Beans I believe is his name. Sean. Edited March 30, 2016 by TheModifier
Stewart Report post Posted March 30, 2016 Modifier. Thanks for the link. not confuse but it's Joe not Luke. "Luke" was a personal reference I tagged on a file I have stored. I do have a set of the chisels. Just trying to find a smaller punched hole. I have done better, much better,so age must be creeping in.
