Bill Williams Report post Posted May 21, 2016 I just bought a singer 211g157 it has a 3 phase motor and runs on 120 volts single phase. It has box on top and I'm not sure what it is and the wires coming out of it have been cut. Any ideas what the box is/ does.
mikesc Report post Posted May 21, 2016 Any pics of what the inside of the box looks like ?..like any circuits, components or or transformers
Bill Williams Report post Posted May 21, 2016 The drive belt goes from the clutch motor to this box and from the box to the sewing machine but it will run without the box being turned on there are two small motors inside the box one with the fan on it it has a small belt that ties into the same shaft that the Drive belt is on The bill that attaches the other motor to the drive pulley is missing
Uwe Report post Posted May 22, 2016 It may be the generator that turns 120V AC into 240V 3-Phase AC to drive the motor. Weird, interesting, and potentially dangerous. Personally, I'd take some pictures to document it, remove it all and install a modern servo motor.
Bill Williams Report post Posted May 22, 2016 I think you are right on it possibly being a three phase converter however it does run without it on single phase not sure how that works but it does I just found it interesting because it looks like it's a factory solution for something because it has singers name on it and I've not seen another machine set up like that one The way it is set up with two pulleys I think I will use it for a speed reducer if nothing else
Bill Williams Report post Posted May 22, 2016 I finally figured out it is an EPS now I just have to figure out how to make it work
mikesc Report post Posted May 22, 2016 I think that without the sensor ( that normally fits on the end of the driven shaft on the sewing machine head ) and the cable that connects it to the box via the black panel, where the plug sockets are on the control box ( below the word Singer ) you are going to have a very hard time getting the EPS to function, unless you have the missing parts ? and can set them up to a "point zero"..Plus..( thinking of another current thread where some of us are discussing EPS systems ) do you really need an EPS ? dikman Report post Posted May 23, 2016 (edited) I'm with mike and Uwe, looks like it could be more trouble than it's worth. Plus because of its age some of those components could be a bit suspect (old capacitors, for example, tend to dry out over time). If you want a needle positioning system I reckon you'd be better off buying a servo with the NPS option. I did that, but found that I was better off without it, as the slow speed of the servo gave me sufficient control. An interesting device, however. Yetibelle Report post Posted May 24, 2016 I am going to guess since the wires are cut they were trying to use it as a step down\speed reducer for the super fast clutch motor. I will guess it didn't work as planned since the pulleys are all about the same size My second guess is they didn't have the correct size v-belt so they just put (2) small belts on since they had these left over parts.
