Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 8, 2016 I picked up a new Commander so "had" to squeeze in a personal project. My 5" IWB was getting a little ratty looking for a guy who builds holsters. 7/8 HO for everything. With Fiebings British tan on the reinforcement and belt loops and regular tan on the main holster body. Both cut down with alcohol then a little NF oil, just on the loops and reinforcement. Then, topped off with M&G cut 50/50 with water. Thanks for looking, Josh
plinkercases Report post Posted August 8, 2016 Did you just build it flesh out or is it grain side but roughed out and if roughed out just by sanding? OR did you use a split?
Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 8, 2016 The main holster body is just "rough out". Basically my copy of the classic Summer Special.
plinkercases Report post Posted August 8, 2016 (edited) you roughed out the grain/hair side with sand paper? correct? I am planning a roughed out gun belt and really like the look you got. Edited August 8, 2016 by plinkercases
JLSleather Report post Posted August 9, 2016 Lookin' good - - as always. It DO look like you got all the good miles outta that last one, too
Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 9, 2016 Plinkercases, It's just turned "inside/out" from what a normal holster would be. I have not roughened up the grain side, nor would I recommend doing so. The grain is on the inside, against the pistol and the flesh side is on the outside. Hopefully I cleared that up. All the best, Josh
Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 9, 2016 Thanks JLS! I lost a little weight and went from OWB to IWB for my every day carry. It sold me on the "Summer Special" design and put some wear and tear on the old holster for sure. All the best, Josh
plinkercases Report post Posted August 9, 2016 Thanks Josh. makes good sense now thanks. How is the toe closed? (at least it looks closed but not stitchline)
Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 9, 2016 Plinkercases, It's open on the bottom but the length is long enough that when I mold it the ends pretty well touch. I'm not sure if it's desirable or not. I do like for my carry holsters t be open bottomed and I do like for the leather to mold over the end of the barrel to some degree. This may be a little too much though. I'll have to ponder on what I think about it. I'd be interested to know what everybody else thinks. Thanks, Josh
particle Report post Posted August 9, 2016 Great looking holster Josh! Love the colors and the flow of the design! I also like to curl the muzzle inward. I think it makes the opening a little more resistant to collapsing, but I try to keep the opening large enough to get an old tooth brush in there to help clean out the holster over time. Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 9, 2016 Thanks Adam! I like your thoughts on having enough room to clean the end out with an old toothbrush.
BHPshooter Report post Posted August 10, 2016 Looks great, Josh! I think a lot of us are guilty of the "shoemaker has no shoes" thing. I did finally make myself a nice one recently, but all of the others were prototypes, or ones where I'd messed up the dye. As for the muzzle, I prefer to have the leather wrap around and protect the muzzle a bit. I generally don't worry about leaving too big of an opening, since I usually use an air compressor to blow out the dust and lint.
Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 10, 2016 Thanks BHP! Blowing them out is a great idea. I'll have to give that a try. All the best, Josh
