Headed absolutely the wrong direction- more cold and snow? Yuck. You have been informative and always entertaining. Its in yer blood, probably end up making leather fish harnesses, dog sled slings or some such. Good luck. (And share any good Iowa jokes.)

The wench wife is from New Zealand -- she has no idea the temps she's in for ;) Already told her, might as well give away that toy snow thrower.. that aint no good up that way.  But my boys are excited to see 60" fish, so it all works out (the musky around here top out about 52-55", and only a couple o those a year).

I think she picked the house she wants ... so itza done deal now .... I could just refuse to go.. but she's kinda tough..

If you need just a few pieces, You can set one of these (http://www.csosborne.com/NO128.HTM) to make a groove deep enough so the bottom of the groove is just thicker that the final thickness of leather you want.. Then draw a close spaced grid with the groover on the backside of the leather. Use a safety beveler to remove leather until the grooves disappear. I also use a really sharp stanley block plane for this. It goes surprisingly fast.
