An elephant in the window

Recommended Posts

This is the 1st one these that I have done also, I thought I would put the elephant in the window, and instead immersing this in a pan of water like I usually do I ran it under the faucet to get it wet enough to form.  The reason for doing that is that I did not know how the elephant would react, well what it did do was to cause the dye to react like you see in the photo.  All that being said I still have my cast iron drawers on.

Looks a little loose.. either suck in the stitch line a bit or use a slightly heavier leather (which accomplishes the same thing, within reason).  I don't mind the color.. trick is how to REPEAT it.

ya not sure I could repeat, I did move the stitch line out just a tad bit more about 1/8 cause the other one was way tight, fact is I got the green gun sitting the black one with a plastic bag to loosen it up a bit.  They were both 8/9 HO with about 1.5 oak tanned pigskin liner and I didn't make any adjustments with the 1st one this one I did but could have probably been a little less in order to tighten up just a tad bit.  Now to try and figure out if I can repeat the next one I do with the dye.

Thanks Jeff for the kind words didn't want to give the impression that I overlooked that, this is a huge leap for me in over coming the trepidation that might come with the outcome.  I am one of those type of learners that has to learn by doing not watching or reading but doing, and sometimes when I jump right in with both feet I come out smelling like, well you get it.

Nah.. truth is we's ALL the 'type' to learn by doing.  Them folks watchin' videos and watchin' somebody else do it, .. while it may be better than nothing at all, truth is a fella don't know how cold 'til he gits in the water.

Good thing about holsters, if a fella was ta mess up, he aint out much but the time.. and hopefully that time wasn't just wasted, but rather traded for some experience ;)

Guy asked me how long 'afore I quit makin' mistakes.  I said 'I'll let you know' !

Started on my second holster. One of your G19 holsters Jeff. A pancake pattern adjusted to a crossdraw Avenger. Somehow messed up the stitch line so have a "scratch" where WAS gonna stitch it. Making for a friend who said whatever it comes out like is good enough for him since he has nothing now.lol.Also forgot to change the angle of the belt loop. Live and learn.

I do all my brown holster mottled on purpose.  I've figured out how to make it mostly repeatable, though I never try for exact anyway. I prefer my brown with some character and graduation of color.  Have not messed with elephant yet though.

I think it's going to make one snazzy looking holster.

Some weird mottling happened to one of mine. I thought it was ruined and made another one for the customer. Later I showed it to my wife. She thought it looked cool so I finished it and put it on the web page for sale. Two days later a guy bought it for his wife. She thought it looked cool.

I haven't found a way to duplicate it, though.

I used elephant once. It darkened way more than regular leather when I oiled it.  I won't oil the elephant part of my next elephant holster.
