TexasJack Report post Posted October 30, 2016 OK, I've exhausted my ideas and am begging for help. My neighbor asked me to make a leather belt for his son to go with a special belt buckle that belonged to someone in the family. "Sure, why not!" I got together the materials and such and figured this would be pretty easy. Then he gave me the buckle. Uh-oh. I totally expected a regular "plate" buckle, with a typically large wire loop. Instead, this is a very narrow buckle and instead of a loop it has a bracket that is maybe 1/8 inch deep. So there's no way that the opposing end of the belt could go through that bracket. It is very similar to the attached picture. I'm sure that I'm over-thinking this and there must be a simple way this works, but honestly I've driven myself crazy trying to figure it out today. RockyAussie Report post Posted October 30, 2016 I have not come across that one before but I would say that the bracket does not allow for the belt to go back through and is only to attach the end to. I would check with the family to see if it were only for a web type belt before or if the strap just stays on the underside against the body kind of thing. Some of these styles only do that. Hermes have a similar one but the end is attached at the pin and has a double bulge to hold the underneath strap in place. The picture here may help. From memory though this one allows the belt to still be fed through the loop before the prong. NVLeatherWorx Report post Posted October 30, 2016 I have had belt buckles like this before on some dress belts and the bar ring is for attaching the loop end too with the running end going underneath it and passing through the belt loops on the inside so that it isn't visible to anyone. Not very functional though as you can't quite cinch them down as well as you can a traditional belt and buckle set because you have to work the running end around underneath the static end; more decorative looking than anything else in my opinion. TexasJack Report post Posted October 30, 2016 Makes sense. Including the "..more decorative than anything else.." part. Thanks! I don't know why this threw me for such a loop except that I have in my mind that buckles are meant to be stout enough to hold things together. The bar on this one is so thin that I may have to start over and use thinner leather - something that also works counter to my view of what a belt is for. NVLeatherWorx Report post Posted October 30, 2016 Could not agree with you more on that TexasJack. A belt is meant to serve a purpose, other than just lookin' pretty. If it isn't capable of holding up the trousers and keeping them where they belong then it is nothing more than a decorative ribbon that should probably repurposed to tie a gift box shut. silverwingit Report post Posted November 1, 2016 Bummer. You could split the tongue to the required thickness to allow it pass through the slot. I'd use my splitter but you could also hand-skive it. You may also have to narrow the tongue slightly at the part that can pass through the buckle, but that could be done tastefully. Michelle
