jake210c Report post Posted December 5, 2016 can anyone help me achieve this two tone marbling effect? Thanks!
TinkerTailor Report post Posted December 5, 2016 Multiple applications of thinned dye, perhaps with more than one colour, brushed or sponged on. It can take a few coats to get the tonality and hide the application streaks. Btw the streaks in the individual coats layer on each other to get the marbling. Even application is not necessarily the key here. Other faster way is with an airbrush.

Brown or chocolate dye, sprayed around the edges, over a piece of leather with wrinkles. Seriously, a child can do this. I really must do a video showing how to do this, since people seem so determined to watch videos. Should take about 30 seconds or so....
JLSleather Report post Posted December 5, 2016 Man, was I way off. Took 3 mins to do a holster and mag pouch (not 30 seconds). Video available shortly .. no subscription required
JLSleather Report post Posted December 5, 2016 I think this will cover the theory.. just my leather lacks wrinkles https://youtu.be/OMVHrTPf1AQ

You're lighting was too good, the video wasn't long enough, and next time I better hear some kids crying in the background.

klaykrusher Report post Posted December 6, 2016 I'm very confused by this video...I need (expect) at least 35 minutes of explanation of what you are going to do before actually doing it....then another 35 minutes to explain what you just did....lol... Even though flawed...I am a new subscriber....
JLSleather Report post Posted December 6, 2016 I did explain it -- it's to show folks what to do with downloaded holster patterns Gotta curb teh subscriptions, tho.. too many and there goes the weight of my talk about "no subscription necessary".... chiefjason Report post Posted December 6, 2016 That's pretty much my bread and butter style on holsters. I have found that a 50-50 mix of beeswax and neatsfoot oil rubbed on and heat gunned to soak it up really evens out the irregularities. It leaves enough to look good, but not enough to look bad. If that makes sense. Plus those colors and a wax finish are a nice combo. The application is easy, I use a wool dauber and swirl it on. I'm not going for the starburst look though. The hard part is convincing yourself you are not going to screw up a perfectly good product.

chiefjason Report post Posted December 8, 2016 Tinker has it. The beeswax and oil helps to blend in any hard lines. I've had finishes I was initially not happy with that were perfectly fine after the wax. Mine is more mottled/marbled than sunburst. But I could use the technique to sunburst if I ever wanted too. I actually dislike a solid brown. Apparently a lot of other folks do too.

jake210c Report post Posted December 8, 2016 I did the sunburst, I am good with that, but I like to be versatile. I will try the 50/50 method next.
chiefjason Report post Posted December 9, 2016 Thanks. And that looks good. I'm gonna have to make a wallet here soon.
