Bobbin Storage! What works for you?

Recommended Posts

A fellow leatherworker and I were discussing this recently, and it dawned on us that we have the same problem. Our side drawer of our juki clone stands have become a catch all for some/most of our bobbins. From switching constantly and the nature of the 207 and 277 thread they refuse to stay wound, thread hanging everywhere and just an unsightly mess to look at. Ive considered making a doweled rack for my thread which currently is nestled in wall mounted cabinets, but not sure if something like a smaller rack for dowels or finish nails would do the trick. Im interested in any other solutions out there that may seem outside of the box to store 2 dozen or more bobbins.

I bought a couple small plastic boxes at JoAnn Fabrics, about 5" x 10 3/4" x 1 3/4". They have plastic latches on the lids.

I used a Forstner drill bit slightly greater in diameter than the bobbin diameter, to drill a row of holes through a  piece of pine 1 1/2" x 7/16". I then used my table saw to rip the pine in half directly through the middle of the holes. Spacers between the rows of bobbins is 1/2". I used small pieces of pine as fillers in the ends.

I know everyone doesn't have a wood shop, I bet a lot of you have a friend with some woodworking tools that would help you out.

I tie the ends of the thread on the bobbin through one of the holes in the bobbin side. You can see in the photo which ones are the first I done.

How about something like a Plano 3600 utility box? I used them for fishing gear and they work for organizing all kinds of small stuff.
