Members carguy4471 Posted March 10, 2017 Author Members Report Posted March 10, 2017 These kits are designed for veneer work, such as skateboards. On the description of the basic pump included with the kit the description says: "The Thin Air Press pump is capable of removing all the air from the small Thin Air Press vacuum bags in less than a minute. It is a low volume, but high-pressure pump and will create almost 3000 lbs of pressure over the size of a skateboard deck!" I would have to believe that's a smidge more than my foodsaver, that does a ok-ish job. Quote

As far as doing holsters and sheaths the food saver has worked pretty darn good IMHO. Draws down to 23in I think if I remember right. Ive used a much better hand pump then what is pictured in the link and yes it would draw down a good vacuum but that was in a very small space and it still took some effort. Not something I would want to be fiddling with doing any number of holsters/sheaths. Far easier to get a cheapo vacuum pump and setup a table dedicated to the job. Quote

I wouldn't mind picking one up if I thought it may outperform the foodsaver I'm using. I've briefly looked into other setups but the pumps are always a bit spendy for my liking. I think if I could do the project for under $150 all told I may be interested. I can't to the table style though, I'd have to run a bag. I have a very small home and space is at a premium. I need to be able to put things away when I'm not working. Quote

That's almost as bad as passing along misinfirmation. I went back and reread what I said and not sure what your getting at, I have used a vacuum table and still use one, but not with a household vacuum or a food processor, I do think the food processor would draw more vacuum than a house hold vacuum, but when I decided that I was going to attempt it I knew that I was going to need the largest pump I could afford or there was no point in attempting the process. Carguy if you keep an eye open on craigslist you might be able to find an automotive type pump that is for sale and or gather up a harbor freight coupon for 20% off and save up and buy one of there pumps, that along with the bag system you should be able to rig something up that can be used an put away when not in use. Take a look at Adams leather utube video and his use of one that is the system your wanting to put together. Quote
Members Dwight Posted March 11, 2017 Members Report Posted March 11, 2017 This is the one I've got, . . . and it is fully every bit the pump one needs to use a bag. It "might be" a bit short for use on a big vacuum table, . . . but in my 24 inch square bag, . . . it'll pull it right down, . . . right quick. AND, . . . there are always 20% off coupons for Harbor Freight. My whole system came in at about $80, . . . bag, pump, hose, valve, . . . the whole magillicuddy, . . . May God bless, Dwight http://www.harborfreight.com/25-cfm-vacuum-pump-98076.html Quote If you can breathe, . . . thank God. If you can read, . . . thank a teacher. You have not, by your own words, yet you say it will not work. How would you know without actual experience? Don't pass along false, bad, or misleading information. It doesn't do anyone any good. Members SLP Posted March 12, 2017 Members Report Posted March 12, 2017 (edited) I have one, use it on double layer 6/7 oz lined with 4/5 oz holsters, among other projects, and like it very much. I do try to protect it from sharp edges. If you look in the picture you will note that there is a rag around the grip of the 45. Edited March 12, 2017 by SLP Quote
