Curious if this is a good buy or not. I don't know a thing about the pricing for leather. From what I've read I'm assuming calf is better because of the time out in pasture or wherever. Less scratches? Less bites?

Where is this at?

I'm not an expert by any means but wickett and Craig is fine leather.

It is younger animal and hasn't gone through the stretching and such an older animal would have, so calf has a tighter grain. I bet it would tool nicely. And it stands to reason the leather would be cleaner. It will also probably be soft and supple as well. I've never used it so I'm just going off what I can remember. I hope this helps. I hope someone chimes in too, I'm curious if this is a good deal.

I know both HO and wickett and Craig are top quality leathers. I would say 25 dollars off wickett and Craig would get me to try it. I want to try it anyway, but it's even better if to can save money in the process.

I will say a regular tooling cowhide runs about 230... That being said, you can get a calf side for 95 it may be worth it.

It should be fine. Maverick carries 1st runs and seconds. But from what I have bought, I have had a good experience with them. I haven't tried calf leather either. Lots of people use it for wallets and wallet interiors.

I have also wanted to try some, but haven't yet. I have 5 or 6 sides of stuff I can't seem to get around to working already.

I'm sorry, I didn't notice the thickness. Probably would be great for holsters.

All the calf I have seen advertised has been thin firm leather. Which was where the wallet reference came from.

When I make my holsters I use 7/8 or heavier and line with 4/5. But what I've read is that calfskin is a lot softer than cowhide. So I'm not sure if it would hold up or not. I think when you call them they oughta be able to let you know for sure if you can use it for that. They seem to know their stuff there.

They have dark brown bridle backs 4/5 , and sides 2/3-7/8 oz. Same price!

  • I wasn't aware that W/C stocked "tooling calf", but I can't remember that I ever asked, either.
  • Not sure of the reason for the discoloration.
  • Presumably, "calf" is slightly smaller sides than "cow", so maybe that's a question to ask.
  • On the other hand, it's $95 -- so maybe worth getting just one or two to see it for yourself.

could have more scrap out of that side than usually..
grade is a subject to suspect - those resellers buy in bulk, and the best quality that you can get directly from tannery.

but you can try of course.

i did buy recently WC eng bridle black for 95 bucks - awaiting for delivery.

Talked with a guy at maverick. He said he wouldn't recommend it for s holster due to durability and also said it doesn't tool as well as cow. The calf side average 18sq ft. So I just ordered from Roger at rjfleather. Just thought the ones that are following this would like to know.

So... Thought I'd go ahead and give it go on the calf and post pics so each can decide for themselves. Labeled as 7/8 oz but more like 3/5. Also has a little pink tint to it.

It's a LONG way from 7/8 to 3/5. Did you gauge it? You can split 7/8 down to 3/5, but it's not easy to go the other way if that's what you were needing!
