Members Clintock Posted May 4, 2017 Members Report Posted May 4, 2017 (edited) Curious if this is a good buy or not. I don't know a thing about the pricing for leather. From what I've read I'm assuming calf is better because of the time out in pasture or wherever. Less scratches? Less bites? Edited May 4, 2017 by Clintock Quote
Members Stetson912 Posted May 4, 2017 Members Report Posted May 4, 2017 Where is this at? I'm not an expert by any means but wickett and Craig is fine leather. It is younger animal and hasn't gone through the stretching and such an older animal would have, so calf has a tighter grain. I bet it would tool nicely. And it stands to reason the leather would be cleaner. It will also probably be soft and supple as well. I've never used it so I'm just going off what I can remember. I hope this helps. I hope someone chimes in too, I'm curious if this is a good deal. Quote
Members Clintock Posted May 4, 2017 Author Members Report Posted May 4, 2017 Here's the website. It's from maverick and it's on sale now. http://maverickleathercompany.com/product/carving-calf/ down from 120 bucks. It's on sale. Hope someone knows before the sale ends. Never tried HO or WC. Really don't want my first experience with either to ruin any future opinions of their leathers. Quote
Members Stetson912 Posted May 4, 2017 Members Report Posted May 4, 2017 I know both HO and wickett and Craig are top quality leathers. I would say 25 dollars off wickett and Craig would get me to try it. I want to try it anyway, but it's even better if to can save money in the process. I will say a regular tooling cowhide runs about 230... That being said, you can get a calf side for 95 it may be worth it. Quote
bikermutt07 Posted May 4, 2017 Report Posted May 4, 2017 It should be fine. Maverick carries 1st runs and seconds. But from what I have bought, I have had a good experience with them. I haven't tried calf leather either. Lots of people use it for wallets and wallet interiors. I have also wanted to try some, but haven't yet. I have 5 or 6 sides of stuff I can't seem to get around to working already. Quote I'm not paying 80 bucks for a belt!!! It's a strip of leather. How hard could it be? 4 years and 3 grand later.... I have a belt I can finally live with. Stitching is like gravy, it's only great if you make it every day. From Texas but in Bossier City, Louisiana.
Members Clintock Posted May 4, 2017 Author Members Report Posted May 4, 2017 So would this be a no go for smaller holsters? Assumed it would work because it's 7/8 oz. Quote
bikermutt07 Posted May 4, 2017 Report Posted May 4, 2017 I'm sorry, I didn't notice the thickness. Probably would be great for holsters. All the calf I have seen advertised has been thin firm leather. Which was where the wallet reference came from. Quote I'm not paying 80 bucks for a belt!!! It's a strip of leather. Members Clintock Posted May 4, 2017 Author Members Report Posted May 4, 2017 Not sure if that's a misprint or not. Think I'll call them tomorrow and clarify. Appreciate the responses. Quote
Members Stetson912 Posted May 4, 2017 Members Report Posted May 4, 2017 When I make my holsters I use 7/8 or heavier and line with 4/5. But what I've read is that calfskin is a lot softer than cowhide. So I'm not sure if it would hold up or not. I think when you call them they oughta be able to let you know for sure if you can use it for that. They seem to know their stuff there. Quote
Members JD62 Posted May 4, 2017 Members Report Posted May 4, 2017 They have dark brown bridle backs 4/5 , and sides 2/3-7/8 oz. Same price! Quote One day at a time my friends John
