Thoughts on singer machines

Recommended Posts

I have been doing some research on singer machines for leathers and wanted to know if anyone had some more info or experiences with these machines.

Heavy duty 4411
Quantum 9960 most expensive of the 3

Industrial 191D-20c

i will be using it for everyday sewing and would like to see thicker leathers at times. Thank you for your time.

All three machines you listed are garment/embroidery machines in the domestic range. The 191-20C appears to be the strongest of the three. The only thing heavy duty about the Singer Heavy Duty 441 is the marketing hype and the paint color.

None of them are well suited for sewing leather beyond a layer or two of very thin, soft garment weight leather.

Plan for two machines, one that does your light garment work (domestic is fine here), and a second machine to do the leather work properly.

Check out this thread to get an idea on the type of sewing machine you need to sew leather:

There are garment factories and upholsterers in Indonesia. Try to find a few and contact them about possibly getting a machine they have retired or plan to retire. Ask for a "walking foot machine." These would have triple feed, two feet (inside and outside) that alternate up and down, while the inside foot, needle and feed dog move the material. Most brands are now made somewhere in China, Korea, or Indo-China. I believe that we have a member here who lives in Indonesia and has inherited a warehouse full of all manner of industrial sewing machines.

That would be Patria. As I understand it he hasn't "inherited" it - yet - but it's in the family and he's making use of what's in it. More like an Aladdin's Cave than a warehouse, I reckon!
