How do I make Carpenter's Bags?

Let me start off by saying I am new to this and don’t really have any idea on what I am doing. I am going to make my own carpenters bags because I can not find one to suit my needs, I had a bunch of 6oz latigo scraps that I plan on using and I have a good idea of what want in my bags.

Now here were I get lost, I can hand sew, but I have never done any on leather. I have no idea on needle size or thread size. Another place I am lost on is I want my bag bottoms to wide I would say 2â€Â, everything I see from other companies they just fold the leather and sew it. So for now that’s were I will leave it rather than to ask a ton of question right off the bat, so any help, advice would be of great help.

Welcome to the forums! First off, when I started leatherwork, I found the following book to be valuable:

The Art of Hand Sewing Leather by Al Stohlman

I started out with these needles and this thread. Sorry, but I don't have much information on creating bags, so maybe someone else can pitch in with some help there.

A suggestion is to look around at other iems that are sewn together and modify the construction techniques to suit your tool bag. eg. look at saddle bags to see how they have added a gusset to give the bag depth. Another idea could be to surf sewing sites in general on the net. The techniques used for sewing clothes, bags in fact any fabric item can then be adapted for a multitude of leather projects.

How many guys out there have been slapped for perving on the Gals when all you were doing was checkng out how her handbag was put together.

Hi Holly,

Curse of the leather or grament worker. The wife catches me stareing at something and says I am embarrasing her. And what's even worse, I AM looking at the leatherwork, not at her fill in the blank. Guys (and gals) appreciate my looking at and admiring the leather on their scooter, but don't be looking at someones chaps or halter or vest too hard or someone might get offended. Of course I ain't gonna say I was just lookin' at the leather, I say woaah man, sorry but you got one dynamite looking ole lady, I couldn't help myself. Most people understand that.
