Claes are great patcher machines and that is their largest one.  Howeever, they all sew about 12 mm which is significantly more than the Singers..  I would say that it is an earlier build, because as we get further in to the DDR the build quality goes down.

I have a black one like this...to replace my Singer that got stolen... I am glad it got stolen in the end, as this is much better.

CLAES are indeed the best patchers you can get. Singers and Adlers are "a joke" compared with them. I really mean that - though I´m a bit Singer crazy! Singers and Adlers for sure do their job - no doubt but the CLAES are just a few levels up! CLAES is still making patchers (Co. now called alled CL Maschinenbau). I once was in their area (Mühlhausem, Thuringia) and I took the chance to visit them. I stumbled in to their officer and just asked if I could buy some spare parts. Sure - the office lady said with a friendly smile on her face. Men - unbelievable nice service there. They took me down to their production site - showed me around a bit and even demonstrated me a Zig Zag patcher machine - an unbelievable thing it is!
