Members thunter9 Posted November 5, 2017 Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 i picked up at auction few years back , a leather cane. its way to flexible to be useful . i thought of making one so i got a pc. of steel rod 3/8 dia. and so long. i'm in the process of peening the one end to about the size of a washer. then i'll drop the washer down the shaft ,flatten it some and start punching circles withe a 3/8 inch hole. glue all those layers together and a washer and peen that. then i'll try and find a belt sander to shape this thing. has any one ever tried this??????????????????????????? Members rodneywt1180b Posted November 5, 2017 Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 I know it's been done in the past. I believe they're considered a type of weapon cane. I want to say the steel core should have a spring temper. You want it to return to straight if it flexes. 3/8" is going to make a heavy cane but it shouldn't bend -at least not easily. Building one is on my "someday" list. Rodney Quote
Members thunter9 Posted November 5, 2017 Author Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 i've started peening and i have some 14oz skirting get it wet and start punching holes Quote
Members WoodysWorkshop Posted November 5, 2017 Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 I use a cane. The pain from my low spine to my right hip won't let me put much weight on my right leg without falling down. In my case, I think it would suit better as a fanny spanker. I know people frown on spankings these days...but that is what's wrong with today's youth. Being bad in Jr. High got you the wooden paddle with holes drilled in it. An at home I got the belt or Hot Wheels track. Quote
Members zuludog Posted November 5, 2017 Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 (edited) Search YouTube for 'leather knife handles', aka 'stacked leather knife handles', and also 'birch bark knife handles', which are of similar construction. They'll give you some similar ideas for a cane You could include short lengths or plugs of hardwood at each end of the cane to protect the ends Edited November 5, 2017 by zuludog Quote
Members battlemunky Posted November 5, 2017 Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 I was going to suggest searching for "stacked leather knife handles" too. The cool thing about having such a long run is that you can do all sorts of cool crap along the way. Get some antler, micarta (making your own is a breeze), acrylic, different hardwoods, anything sandable really, and you can stack them in along the way. Please take some pics along the way because this is gonna be cool. Quote
Members thunter9 Posted November 5, 2017 Author Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 after i get the one end peened to as large as i want about 1/2 inch , got a ways to go. as for the cane tip i'll go with a cane rubber tip over the peened end. want it to grip not slide around. the antique one i found is just the peened end. just want to protect the floor. i've thought i'd chuck it up in a lathe to sand it down , but thought better of it for cheating. want it all by hand the old one i have is probably rusted and that's why its so flexible .i've been kicking this around for years and thought it was time. Members battlemunky Posted November 5, 2017 Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 (edited) I dunno man, thats gonna be a butt ton of work all by hand. I won't hold it against you if you use power tools, especially if you add some other materials into the stack. Edited November 5, 2017 by battlemunky Quote
Members rodneywt1180b Posted November 5, 2017 Members Report Posted November 5, 2017 I don't think a lathe is cheating at all. If you got one, use it. Rodney Quote
