Members Nohothand Posted December 15, 2017 Members Report Posted December 15, 2017 I machine sew protective devices for welders. Mostly arm pads, knee pads and hand protectors. I only use Kevlar thread because it is heat and burn resistant up to around 800 degrees. Generally I am sewing together a combined 16-20 oz. of medium tempered Latigos, bison, and veg tan.I currently source this thread from the Dominican Republic. They have a decent price but the color selection is very limited and the shipping takes forever. My question is does anyone know of a domestic supplier for DuPont or equivalent Kevlar thread? Quote
mikesc Posted December 15, 2017 Report Posted December 15, 2017 (edited) You don't say where you are in your "profile", but presuming that you are in the USA Dupont list the places who manufacture or sell kevlar thread on this page http://protectiontechnologies.dupont.com/sewing-threads-manufacturers there is also ebay http://www.ebay.com/bhp/kevlar-thread Edited December 15, 2017 by mikesc Quote
Northmount Posted December 15, 2017 Report Posted December 15, 2017 Take a look at this "thread" http://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/9223-need-supplier-for-bonded-kevlar-thread/ There are other "threads" here on leatherworker.net if you care to do a search for them. Do a google search with the following search string. "site:leatherworker.net kevlar thread" minus the quotation marks. Restricts the search to this site. Tom Quote

Northmount Posted December 16, 2017 Report Posted December 16, 2017 Also note that kevlar thread is very abrasive and wears grooves in the thread path. Tom Quote
Members ChasCS Posted December 24, 2017 Members Report Posted December 24, 2017 You might also like to look into using Hypalon and Arimid threads. Both very strong. Chas Quote

Tom FYI: in motorcycle road riding and racing Kevlar was the "Thing" for about a year, 1999-2000, sure the fiber it self is wonderful but the leather surrounding it get cut and catastrophically fail instead of a few lost stickes.. I look for pictures to show the evidence.. On 12/24/2017 at 3:43 AM, ChasCS said: You might also like to look into using Hypalon and Arimid threads. Both very strong. Chas As far as I know Aramid, is a commercial name for Kevlar (invented by Dupond) Quote
Members Nohothand Posted December 27, 2017 Author Members Report Posted December 27, 2017 Thank you for the recommendations. Kevlar thread is also heat and burn resistant to about 800 degrees. I make various forms of welder protection, hence the Kevlar. Nomex thread would also work but I have not sewn with that yet. Thanks again! Quote

You are correct, about Du-Pont. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramid wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramid It's a small component of what holds our prized hunting bags together, from Badlands Packs, through rough handling in the bowhunting bush. http://badlandspacks.com Chas Quote
