Kevlar thread ??

I machine sew protective devices for welders. Mostly arm pads, knee pads and hand protectors. I only use Kevlar thread because it is heat and burn resistant up to around 800 degrees.  Generally I am sewing  together a combined 16-20 oz. of medium tempered  Latigos, bison, and veg tan.I currently source this thread from the Dominican Republic. They have a decent price but the color selection is very limited and the shipping takes forever. My question is does anyone know of  a domestic supplier for DuPont or equivalent Kevlar thread?

There are other "threads" here on leatherworker.net if you care to do a search for them.  Do a google search with the following search string.  "site:leatherworker.net kevlar thread" minus the quotation marks.  Restricts the search to this site.

Also note that kevlar thread is very abrasive and wears grooves in the thread path.

You might also like to look into using Hypalon and Arimid threads. Both very strong.

FYI: in motorcycle road riding and racing Kevlar was the "Thing" for about a year, 1999-2000, sure the fiber it self is wonderful but the leather surrounding it get cut and catastrophically fail instead of a few lost stickes..

 

I look for pictures to show the evidence..

As far as I know Aramid, is a commercial name for Kevlar (invented by Dupond)

Thank you for the recommendations. Kevlar thread is also heat and burn resistant to about 800 degrees. I make various forms of welder protection,hence the Kevlar. Nomex thread would also work but I have not sewn with that yet.   Thanks again!

Yes, please pardon my spelling of it above. You are correct, about Du-Pont.
