When the hole on the back plate is bigger than the rivet

Recommended Posts

Bought this lock and was about the install the hasp, but found out that the rivet (1/16" dia) is a lot smaller than the hole. The hole can fit a 3/32" dia rivet no problem and works well, but the supplier says in their experience 1/16" works ok too.

Can anyone teach me how to set this rivet or is the rivet just too small for it's hole? Or is there a tool I need to use other than a hammer or mallet?

Looks very difficult to get this rivet to spread enough to hold.  Looks too short as well to add a bur.  Need to get larger diameter rivets.

Use a ready-rivet? Post diameter is usually 1/8" [about 3mm] and vary in length and can be cut shorter if necessary. Head diameter from about 4mm upwards. Looks like a double-head rivet of 8mm diameter heads would do the job.
