stiffner

Recommended Posts

I am going to be making a range bag for a guy, using some soft calf skin

I am going to add a 1/4'' piece of plywood on the bottom

The sides puzzle me.

Would  it be possible to add a thin piece of plastic tubing inside the edge of the bag, to make it stiff but not hard?

the bag will be  24'' x 12'' x 12''

has anyone done this?

maybe i did not ask this question correctly .

I do not know the correct name of the corner I am making.  it is 2 pieces of leather placed finished side to finished side

sewn together then turned inside out to reveal a folded seam with out stitches showing.

what i want to do, is add a thin strip of metal or rubber tubing, in that seam, to help stiffen the corner

i know what i want to do, i do not know how to incorporate the stiffener into the seam

and am seeking suggestions from those that may have the knowledge i am lacking

below is the seam  and the seam with the stiffener  held together by hand

round cord is used its called welt cord you can google it, sew it inside a piece of your leather to make the round welt then sew then finished welt in when you sew the seam together. you can use plastic tubing or any thing round and with the flex you want.

I've heard it called piping. Same process as what Chuck described. Might be another term/ process to search for while you are looking into it

I too know it as piping.

I've used thin electric wire / flex for the internals, as well as round leather lace, cord, string, whatever has the diameter I need.

As well as doing a separate welt you can turn over one edge of one piece and sew the cord into that as you sew the main seam. Fold the main leather over the cord and glue it down
