Members FireGuy7 Posted December 10, 2019 Members Report Posted December 10, 2019 Looking for a good sewing machine to help with my Fire Department Leatherwork. The toughest/thickest leather I'd be sewing threw is through 2, 7-8oz pieces of veg-tan to make a fire helmet shield. Does anyone know if the Janome HD-3000 can handle this thick of leather? Quote
Members steven1 Posted December 10, 2019 Members Report Posted December 10, 2019 It won't sew that thick, two layers of 7/8 oz (14-16 oz) roughly 1/4 inch thick. You will want significantly more machine than that. You would not be happy with it. Besides, you will not stop at just helmet shields. Quote
kgg Posted December 10, 2019 Report Posted December 10, 2019 Think you be much better off with something else rather then a domestic sewing machine. Look for a walking foot sewing machine it will serve you much better. If you need a portable machine look at machines like the Sailrite or Reliable Barracuda which have walking foot. kgg Quote

I think even if it would sew it, you would eventually be disappointed with the stitch length and thread size limitations. Quote
