brozowskir Report post Posted January 19, 2020 Hello! I am looking to make a purse out of vegtan leather. I wanted to add an outside pocket but am not sure of the best way to make it look good without it feeling like its just plopped onto the outside. Any thoughts? Also, how do I dye and finish a bag to make it absolutely rain worthy. I don't want to be out in the elements and suddenly have a bleeding bag.
Mark842 Report post Posted January 19, 2020 (edited) Are you wanting to tool or stamp a design on this purse? If not I would not use vegtan leather. I would use something like Horween Chromexcel is similar Chrome oil tanned pre dyed leather. The color will be sealed for you and will not bleed and it will stand up to weather. Vegtan can be dyed and sealed and made to last but it is a process that has many solutions with varying examples of success as you will find out when the responses start rolling in. Everyone has a favorite method and formula, some work, some not really. Edited January 19, 2020 by Northmount changed vegan to vegtan as mentioned by OP

brozowskir Report post Posted January 22, 2020 Thanks for the response. Yes, I did want to tool a pattern in. I am using the Ecoflow leather dye. I've have trouble with bleeding with this dye before. I buff if after I dye it and then after applying Leathersheen (aerosol). Is it possible to totally seal in the dye by hand?

Resolene, . . . mixed 1 to 1 in water makes a solution that will seal the dye, . . . as well as a floor product called Mop and Glo, . . . again, reduced with water 1 to 1. Downside?? A slightly harder finish and feel, . . . as both are acrylic finishes and tend to be "hard" finishes. But they do seal the dye, . . . May God bless, Dwight
