ElectricZombie Report post Posted April 17, 2020 Does anyone have any good suggestions for books or videos that would provide a basic list of tools, materials and techniques necessary to begin working with leather? I'd like to begin making leather saps and am not sure where to start.
TargetRockLeather Report post Posted April 18, 2020 When I first started researching leather working tools, I found this video by Ian Atkinson. He gives a very nice overview of the basic tools you would need. He's also got a list which includes suppliers. In my opinion it is an excellent starting point: The video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTfMRaVyCd4 Tool list on his website: https://ianatkinson.net/leather/toolset.htm Before the comments start, yes, he also sells patterns and finished pieces. He's got some very helpful videos for free though. Check them out.
Hardrada Report post Posted April 18, 2020 (edited) TargetRock beat me to that link. Do get those books Ian Atkinson suggests. Valerie Michael's you'll have to buy, but the Al Stohlman ones are available for free at Tandy's Online Library. Do get the second volume of The Art of Making Leather Cases for sure, as it has a whole section on making handles: very useful. Dwight Report post Posted April 18, 2020 The first thing you need to decide, . . . what do you want to do with leather. The people making high end leather vests would not know most of the time where to start with a saddle. Many holster and belt makers would have a tough time doing a really nice ladies' purse. Determine what product you want to produce, . . . go to a local Tandy store, . . . tell them, . . . let them give you some good advice. May God bless, Dwight
