Sheepskin Question

Can I dye The hide side of a sheepskin shearing so that the wool side stays it’s natural state or will it bleed through?

Anything I find on line all shows dyeing the entire hide through immersing it.

I always find with a question such as this at best you'll get three different answers. I would either try it on a scrap piece or try a very diluted dye and proceed with the darker if it doesn't bleed. And of course leave it to dry with the shearling side up.

Thanks that is my next step just wanted to check first to see if anyone had experience with it.

You could probably do a dry run with some plain alcohol and see. Most dyes are very close to alcohol of some sort so they should penetrate similarly. If you apply the plain alcohol and it runs through the other side then I'd expect the dye to behave similarly.

Hi, I've actually tried to use the leather dye on the wool to change it's color, and it doesn't take, at least not the yellow shearing used to back western saddles. I used a red alcohol based dye. The skin dyed beautifully. The shearing was red at first and then i squeezed the excess out and had red with yellow places, decided to wash it in my sink and when I was done I had a red hide with yellow wool. It doesn't take the black very well either. But I asked a hair dresser friend to try some of her dyes and they all worked quite well.
