Arturomex Report post Posted November 7, 2020 Using a Techsew 4800 machine. I've been using Renia Aquilim SG to glue some pieces together. On the excellent advice from Wiz I bought some titanium coated needles. I note that at times the glue seems to be sticking to the needle when I'm sewing this stuff. (The Aquilim seems to stay "tacky" forever.) With the titanium coating it comes off the needle easily but my concern is that it might be going down into the machine. Do I have a problem? Anything I should be looking for/checking? Thanks, Arturo
Wizcrafts Report post Posted November 8, 2020 Clean the hook and shuttle after sewing through Aquilim or other tacky glue. Use a dauber or cotton swab dipped in Goof Off to rub all of the moving parts that come in contact with the top thread under the throat plate. Use it on the needle when you stop to turn corners or start a new seam. I run into a similar problem sewing through 3M Leather Tape from Wawak and stick on Velcro. Wiping down the needle with Goof Off keeps it from getting fouled by the adhesive and closing the eye. If the problem gets out of control, try running your top thread through Goof Off, or liquid silicon in the lube pot if the machine has one. Magnetic lube pots are available for purchase on the Interwebs and from your favorite dealer.
shoepatcher Report post Posted November 9, 2020 Titanium coated needles cuts down on the glue sticking to the needle! glenn
Arturomex Report post Posted November 9, 2020 (edited) Thanks, Wiz. Appreciate it. Yeah, the titanium does cut down on it, Glenn, but I still see the needle coming up snotty once in a while. Not hard to get it off the needle but I was more concerned with what it might be doing to the innards of the machine. You know... if it's coming off that easily when the needle is up, what's coming off underneath on the up stroke? This is "closed window" season so I'm reluctant to open the Barge (You know - "Get high on the craft, not the cement." LOL) but now I'm curious to know if I'd have the same problem and concerns using that instead of the Aquilim SG. If using Barge will minimize problems I'll bite the bullet and open the house up. Just don't want to have nightmares of my late father yelling, "I'm not paying to heat the whole damn neighborhood." Thanks again, Arturo Edited November 9, 2020 by Arturomex

It comes in 60 yard rolls, in 4 widths: 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" and 1". Leather Tape is on sale this month. Get you some! Thank me later. While the tape is perfect and economical for edges, it gets expensive if you use it on large inside areas. It calls for Titanium coated needles to sew through Leather Tape and still may need some Goof Off on the needle, now and then. However, I haven't had any problems under the throat plates and have used this tape since at least 2010.

I normally use "goof off" to clean my needles when I have glue sticking to them but the titanium coated needles might be of some benefit when I sew belts. Thanks in advance.. Arturomex Report post Posted November 10, 2020 Well, I'm gonna thank you now, Wiz. If you recommend it, I'm sure it's going to work and work well. The order has already been placed. I bought my needles from Cutex off their ebay site, Ed. Shipping took close to 8 weeks. I'm not sure how much of that was Cutex and how much of it was caused by the Canadian Postal/Customs system. I've been purchasing supplies regularly from the US during the Covid pandemic and when shipped by DHL, FedEx etc. I've usually had my orders within two weeks. It was only the Cutex order, shipped USPS, that took a couple of months and I suspect a lot of that delay was caused by the incompetence of Canada Post and the Customs system. I'm not going to go on a long rant here but I will say that there are a lot of operations, not necessarily leather related, using Covid 19 as a blanket excuse for poor service. If you do order from Cutex, Ed, I'd be curious to know how long it takes you to receive your purchase. Please, keep us updated. Thanks, Arturo

I looked at the eBay listing and they have size 24 needles but I'm not sure the 135x16 will work in my Cobra Class 4 machine. It seems like every manufacturer has their own nomenclature for sizing. LOL. No they most certainly won't! You need System 7x3, 7x4 or 794 for that machine. The needles are 60mm long! System 135x16 are for common upholstery grade walking foot machines. I didn't know you are running a Class 4. This topic is about a Techsew 4800 and belongs to @Arturomex. You need to start your own topic.

Gregg From Keystone Sewing Report post Posted November 13, 2020 Actually, a titanium nitrate needle coating over chromium plated needle is used to help keep the needle point sharper for longer. A Needle with with a non-stick coating of NIT (Nickel-Phosphor-PTFE) for example from Schmetz is a Blukold type. This reduces needle heat, and more importantly helps keep the needle clean, thus helping the needle run cooler than normal chrome or titanium.

I'm not terribly good at Google and I can't seem to find anything like this in 135X16. Does anyone make that? Thanks, Arturo
JollyDodgerCanvas Report post Posted July 24, 2021 Schmets website says they no longer make the needle mentioned above, non stick. But I found this... https://www.allbrands.com/products/15553-organ-dpx17-135x17-cs-cool-sew-ptfe-coated-non-sti It's a PTFE coated needle by Organ. (Teflon) should help with sticky assemblies.
