Doug C Report post Posted February 8, 2008 Who's round knife do you use? I am looking for a good round knife. I have a very good round knife from Ernie Grosspich (SP) but he is no longer making them according to his web site. Does anyone have a knife from Dozier? I see them advertised in the LCSJ. Any favorites out there? Doug
Art Report post Posted February 8, 2008 Bill Buchman, Bend Oregon Bill Buchman's number direct is 541-382-8851. Order direct from him (instead of Big Sky) if you want a smaller handle that is better when you "palm" the knife. Art Who's round knife do you use? I am looking for a good round knife. Kevin Report post Posted February 8, 2008 Doug, I have a lot of round knives, but no customs. When I started this there wasn't much choice. I have a Don Carlos I absolutely love, some Blanchards, Dixon and of course some Osbornes, a couple of them not being worth a oops. But my everyday knife is just a 5" Osborne, that cost about $35 from Weaver. Since Osborne has gotten some competition they have improved the metal some I guess. The handle is a little long for my hand, so I cut it down. It's not pretty at all, but it gets the job done. Someday I might get one of those Jueskes with the pink handle, it's so bad , it's goood. Rawhide Report post Posted February 8, 2008 I have an Osborne Round knife, an Al Stohlman Brand head knife, and a Danny Marlin head knife. I use the Marlin all the time. It's definitely my favorite. I haven't tried any of the others mentioned earlier. Marlon
ferret Report post Posted February 9, 2008 I made my own from an old circular saw blade. It doesn't look too pretty but it feels comfortable to use and it works. Cost 25p (about 50c) and a days work.
william Report post Posted February 9, 2008 Ferret I really like yours and the saw blade idea is great. Thanks for sharing.
rawhide1 Report post Posted February 9, 2008 Ferret Great idea I was wondering after cuting out and grinding. Does a fella have to retemper. Thanks Mike
ferret Report post Posted February 10, 2008 Got the idea from an old pslac newsletter (july 96) available here http://pslac.org/table_index_rawhide.htm . Re-tempering is fairly easy, just apply heat evenly with a blowtorch about an inch back from the edge until the steel turns brown/purple (260 c), then put it in a bucket of cold water. I used a 7 inch diameter blade and made a "tradional" round knife as well.
K-Man Report post Posted February 10, 2008 This is mine: 440c steel, rockwell temp of 58-60, genuine sanbar stag on the handles, with 1/4" fancy pins. 60-layered damascus on the bolsters, and engraving on side of the tang. I'm having a 3/4 size knife made from damascus steel with ivory micarta grips. Should be ready in a couple of weeks. I'll post a pic when it's done.
