Hi everyone,

Last time i posted pictures of my printed leather products,i met with a very hostile response from the members arguing this community was for handcrafted leather products only.

So, this time im posting an upgrade recently added to my product range, which combines Hand tooling and print on leather.

Attached picture,of a gents wallet flap is an example of the same.

Im looking for your inputs regarding the concept.

Tks,

Karan Vaz (k47)

Well, the concept is good I think. It looks like it would be a product that is mass produced in your country, so that may be why you have run into resistance on this site. The folks here are extremely talented individuals, who take a great deal of pride in hand crafted products. I think manufactured items tend to try and "cheapen" the hard work that handcrafters put in to their work. There is a HUGE difference between the two, that is probably why you felt a little hostility. Just my 2 cents.

So the stamping is done by hand and the picture is printed onto the leather.?

Perhaps a level of hand tooling will satisfy folks that there is some craft going into the products..

I agree that there's probably a market for it, k47..

Personally, I also see belts for sale that are obviously produced with a rolling stamp and I just skirt past them, but there is a market for them, or else they wouldn't be there.

As far as I'm concerned, I think the printing sits somewhere along the same lines as the products that have lasered designs on them. What lasered work I've seen, is intricate, but doesn't interest me as far as any level of competence..

The skill level required to make an item goes down with every machine used and is instantly reproducible, therefore not really a custom piece.

I can see why you ran into some hostility with the printed part of your business, but to me its not much different to these methods I've mentioned.

Some people will buy the printed, rolled and lasered products, but not me..

Just my honest opinion

Regards

Phil

Yep stamping by hand and then the print. I plan to make the best of both processes and create an intricate product.

And thanks for your opinion. Though i do not agree that printing does not reflect any level of competence, its your view, i respect that.Cheers !!

In that case, I'll embellish that statement a little k47, as it didn't quite say what I meant..

I have worked with computers and know there's a level of competence required for using any software or hardware.

What I meant was with regards to leatherwork competence when creating a design using the printing method.

If you're stamping by hand, then credit to you..its nowhere near the same as hitting the Enter key.. ;) IMHO

Phil

I'm not really bothered by the printing - I think it's just another tool that can be used to create a particular end product. It may not be to everyone's liking, but that doesn't mean it's not worthy of exploration and/or display on this site. I've seen some work posted here by another maker that uses lasers quite a bit to add artwork to his pieces - I think it looks fantastic! There is also another guy that I stumbled across on Facebook that has printed some nice looking full-color stuff on his leather.

I've really gotten into hand-drawn imagery on my journal covers, which I then color with artists markers. I'd love to be able to print, or laser burn the line-work then come back and color it with markers. For something with such a small (if any) profit margin, anything you can do to speed up the production process is a good thing.

Now, I have to ask - how are you printing your artwork on the leather? Care to share the process?

this concept may have its place in leather, just not for me.

@ particle : While i laud you for your open mindedness regarding this new process, i also am compelled to keep the secrecy of the same. I havent invented anything and gradually the whole process will become common knowledge, but as of now, im just keeping trade secrets! i hope you understand my point. Im not being secretive, just being business-"wise". As far as financials, yes this will definitely help margins, if you want to know in detail , just send me personal msg, ill give you all the details. @ horrrk- Point noted phil, thanks for the clarification.
