Handbag As Per Tboyce Pattern

Recommended Posts

This was my first attempt at a bag like this. Thanks to tboyce (patterns and templates)I gave this a go,pattern worked like a charm.(Brown Bag)But my wife needed a bigger bag so enlarged the pattern and the natural/white bag was the result. Now in everyday use.Aplogies for the background. Let me know what you think.

tboyce is awesome! Bags look awesome, I love the second one, can get a nice $$$ for that.

The pattern on the cream one, was that done by you?

They both look awesome! Especially the cream one - I like the brown leather a lot, but the larger bag looks more proportional with those straps.

Thanks. Yes I cut the pattern. I saw something similar on this site. Lots of trials later I got it right. I have not sold any yet but had a few inquiries. Challenge has been to cut my own lacing.Bought Grants brading book, big help as well as this site.

I am starting this handbag and was wondering if someone could clarify how the straps are attached? Are they sewn on first then stitched THROUGH or?

Also, are your bags lined? any pix of the inside.... :) Thank you in advance.

Hi Wishful.Apologies for the late response. The straps I put on last after all leather treatment.I wet and folded the leather double on either side of the straps.Fit the straps tight between the 2 folds and mark the hole positions.I then flatten the bag mark out the row of holes and punch them,as well as the strap,I used holes here not slits.you need to be accurate with the centre to centre dim's as you are lacing thro 5 pieces of leather!.I then wet fold again and push a fid or a round tool thro each set of holes the cause them to line up.Lace up and done.I have now marked up my pattern so I do not struggle again and will simply mark them out.As long as I use the same thickness leather. It is a mission but worth the effect. My straps are double back to back 2mm leather.

I did not line the inside, but will do next time,my wife wanted plain leather inside undyed.Let us have pic's of your finished product, keen to see other ideas.Cheers.

Thank you for your response. Actually its that whole "lace up and done" part that has me stumped. I laced mine up but did not end up using the holes in the straps/handles so I don't think its strong enough. I have a length of lace with a flat needle at each end. I put the lace down the holes from the top side that leaves the lace inside the purse area. Left goes up R hole, Right goes up L hole - so that means I have not yet gone thru the handle... I keep staring at your pix but cannot figure it out , I just gotta take it apart and do it again...Anyway, here is a few pix of the purse - almost done!

Hi Wishful,I like the finish on your leather outside, keen to know what you do that.Regarding the handle lacing,I end up with 2 rows of parallel holes left and right of where the strap lies. The front bend line of the bag left and right of the strap is between the 2 rows of holes. So that when the bag and strap are ready for lacing the 2 holes left ,the strap holes and the 2 holes right all line up,and a fid can pass thro.I do not go thro behind the strap inside. If this is not clear let me know and I will scan and post a sketch.Cheers.

That makes sense and is something that occurred to me but I did not see that on the pattern so figured I was missing something. Lol. I would love to see any pix. as far as the treatment for the leather I used, I actually bought it that way from Tandy. It had the design and the brown finished.makes it so easy.

Cheers

First off that is some top notch work, very impressed. I printed the pattern and am very interested in making one.

My question is what size and type of lace are you using?

Thanks
