Hello, I am not a leather professional or even a hobbyist. I bought a leather journal as a gift for a friend. I intended to stamp a title into the cover of this journal as he is a writer. I contacted a couple different leather craft stores here in LA (Standing Bear and Tandy) and was told that the type of leather the journal is made from (Latigo) would not hold a stamp. I'm looking for a leather professional in Los Angeles who might be able to help me out. Can you recommend someone? Are there other ways to get this title into the leather? Laser? Embossing? Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks, SF

Hi! I'm searching on Internet (unsuccessfully) for a complete or very extensive guide to the samples of stamp impressions on the leather and its reference code or number; I enclose a photo of what I'm looking for so that they understand me. So, does it exist, is there an extensive guide? Thank you.

Hey: i used to own a "how to" book which included the instructions for the "R" series Leather Factory rope stamps. I lost all of my leather working books in a fire almost two years ago. I can't remember which one had the article(s) in it! I looked at some posts on lining up basket weave stamps- they were pretty good, but if any of you have any suggestions or detail photos (close-ups of pre-dyed work) I'd find that very helpful! swivelsphinx

FarmerDave asked about this in another thread. There are several methods to prevent stretch in leather that is tooled. Some leather stretches more than others, and that can be due to hide quality and tannage, where in the hide the piece is cut from, how thick the side is etc. Other factors are degree of moisture in the leather, the tooling pattern, and type of stamping or tooling done. Some geometrics will really push, and some florals, not much. Personally I use carton sealing tape in overlapping layers. It is important (I think) to use only carton tape if you use clear tape. Label tape has a much stronger adhesive and will be harder to pull off. I have used Scotch…

Does anyone have any real good tips on beveling? I've been working with leather for awhile but just can't seem to get a real clean/crisp looking bevel. I even spend a lot of time with a modeling tool, but it just never comes out very good. I know that practice is supposed to make perfect, but I don't think my practice is perfect. (Sorry I don't have any pictures) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Butch

After being thoroughly unimpressed with the font selections for letter/number stamping I stumbled on a post or two here that talk about using metal letterpress type to do the job. After poking around the Intergoogle a bit I can honestly say I'm completely convinced! I do have a few questions about it before I pull the pin on a set. Are there general guidelines for what font characteristics work better or worse? Is bold bad or good? Thin bad or good? What is the smallest size font that is workable with leather? Are there particular fonts that look better in leather than others? My guess is that 18 pt is probably as small as you would want to go and my plan is to st…

i've been researching different custom leather stamp companies and they all have their own specialties. I'm wondering if any of you could tell me the differences between the types of stamps and the benefits of each? In the future, should I decide to get a custom logo leather stamp, i'd want something durable that will last me a lifetime. I see that some companies offer them in steel, brass & plastic. I'm sure each has their advantages and disadvantages but I don't know what they are. I was watching a youtube video on leather stamps by Ian Atkinson and he said that chrome tanned leather doesn't take stamps too well, whereas, veg tanned leather does. I basically wouldn…

Hello all I have had the idea to do this for some time now but everything else seemed to get in the way (job hunting, taking care of 9 year old daughter and 4 year old grandkid, remodelling studying to become engineer etc does get in the way) but yesterday morning I had an hour or so of free time and set this up on the homemade cnc machine. I cut it out of pine because thats what I found laying about. Its 3.5 by 5.5 and I decided to just hit it with hammer and it cracked along the grain in the middle. So I backed it up with a couple of blocks and clamped it in a c-clamp. The results were not perfect but I think with a couple of modifications it could be a very useful arr…
