GROUP LEADER TRAINING PROGRAM Part One LEATHER MERIT BADGE INSTRUCTION Purpose: To present group leaders with the background information and basic skills necessary to enable them to guide their scouts efforts toward gaining the Leatherwork Merit Badge. This program was set up using the Boy Scout Merit Badge Pamphlet (1983 Revision). In preparing this program we have drawn on our skills and experience, so there will be some differences between the booklet and this program. Where these occur, we have taken care to explain the reasons for the differences. These should not, however, impact the skills necessary for successful completion of the program. Time Required: On…

I have not done a lot of leatherworking in my life. It turns out I am mostly a hoarder (collector?) of tools than a user. I mostly work with Cub Scouts at day camps and Boy Scouts as a Merit Badge Councellor for Leatherwork. So most of the stamping I do is just to demonstrate the different types of stamps before I turn them loose. Last weekend I did a couple of LW Merit Badges classes for about 35 Scouts. There was an Eagle Scout in attendance that reminded me of myself. He wanted everything perfect and was afraid to do anything until he was sure it was going to look good. He wanted this one 3d stamp on his project. It was one of the larger stamps but no matt…

For a variety of reasons related to the pandemic, our scout troops are meeting virtually. With this in mind, and with the distribution of supplies limited to drop off/mail-out boxes, I'm hoping the larger community can help us come up with a project or three that can be done with minimal "real tools" We already have ideas on sharpie-colored keyfobs, with a pre-set rivet sewing a small pre-cut & pre-punched pouch 3d-print some simple stamps & give each scout a 3-4 different ones (I have a 3d printer at my disposal, and this would eliminate the 'good' stamps going out and possibly not getting returned) Trying to keep costs per fa…

I wanted to pass along some 'thank yous' from our scouts to all the people here who helped by donating supplies, tools, gave me awesome discounts on dies and stamps and everyone who has given me advice. Two recent events had leatherworking stations - an area-wide camporee had a station run by older scouts, the girls made leather belt pouches for their pocket knives. Another camping weekend had girls stamp custom bracelets for troop unity using their new mascot (a howling wolf). We are currently planning small projects for upcoming Ice Fishing and spring camp events.

I put together a really quick project that will be easy to complete for kids about 8 years old and up. Younger kids might need some help with the stitching. The samples are all from suede scraps I got from donations, but veg-tan leather would allow more design and finish options. If you have a large circular punch, use it to cut the notches for the swivel hardware. I chose to punch the stitching holes with a diamond chisel set (mounted on an arbor press to reduce injuries and catastrophic mistakes.) There isn't much stitching, so the project will take an adult minutes and a child should be able to design and assemble in an hour. Dimensions are in the photo, 8" …

I’m trying to begin a leather stamping / crafting station at our Girl Scout service area camp. Neither I nor any other adult has extensive lw experience. But, I'm willing to fumble through it. The goal is a multilevel skill progression so each year the girl could learn some new skill. Classes are 45*50 minute blocks with the possibility of more than one block assigned to the project. Ages are 5 years-18 years Groups of 6-12 I currently have purchased 8 mallets, 4 alphabets, and around 30 picture stamps. Two Arbor presses have been donated as well. One will be dedicated to rivet or snap setting. depending on the project. Can I have feedback on my…

We've tested out koolaid dyes on kids' work and that turned out pretty well. With kids projects, do you finish it with anything after that? I see low VOC acrylic finish from Tandy Leather. I'm wondering if painting the acrylic finish is the same level of risk as painting with plain acrylics. Is there anything else I should look at?

A few years ago in ether Tandy Leather's promotional sales catalog or monthly sales flyer they had a Scout Camp special. It had lots of design that could be done by using just their 6 basic stamp tools. One was a monkey and several other animals. I loved it so much I kept the copy of it. However now when I want it again I cant find it. Does any one else remember this or have a copy of it?
