Leather Sewing Machines
Lighter weight leathers can be sewn on home machines, but the tough stuff requires commercial or industrial sewing machines. They can be tricky to set up and operate, but can't be beat for production work.

So, I just got a very used ga-2688l that I am restoring. ( I posted a couple of photos on another post). It was such a good deal that I could not turn it down, despite it being a lot more than I need. My goal is to sew some leather cushions for a chair. Probably will get more into leatherwork as my research has created a lot of interest. this forum is fantastic! The machie say it takes DYx3 size 26 needles. ( I have about 10 round tip) Those needles are pretty big and I think I would like to use smaller needles, but am having trouble with the nomenclature of needles. I would like to be able to sew thread tex 92, 137, and 207, and would like a LL or LR need…

Im wondering if my problem is a safety clutch as since having a minor sewing problem(though there were about 4 rotations worth of thread caught up under the bobbin holder) the hook & needle timing appears to be waaaay out now, about half a rotation away from meeting . I've never heard of a safety clutch. Does anyone know whether an old 291 would have one?

Hello all, I have very recently acquired a singer 16-188 and I have managed to mess up either the timing or the take up spring (the loop forms just before the hook has time to pick it up), I am not exactly sure which. I am using a size #138 thread with a size 23 needle (16x63) I was just wondering if anyone could tell by just looking at a picture of the BDC position of the needle to tell whether it is timed correctly or not. I believe the eye of the needle is about 1/16" too far below the hook. I wanted to ask so if in the case it is the fault of the take up spring I can save myself the trouble of removing the whole faceplate (is that what its called?) to access the needl…

How to get this stitch length mechanism freed up? In this first photo of the main shaft, we have the timing cog on the right, the feed shaft cap in the middle, and the stitch length mechanism on the left. The large hole in the middle of the stitch length mechanism is for a set screw which I have removed. The smaller hole (upper right) of the stitch length mechanism is where I have removed the lock screw. so that the adjustment can actually be made. Then I rotate the handwheel some, and now we see a different set screw (lower left, already loosened) and the big adjustment screw next to it. The adjustment screw can move about 200 degrees from left…

Where can I get a flat bed attachment for my 287-RB other than Recent Relic? Is there another vendor? Or is the another cylinder arm machine that has a flat bed that will work on my 287-RB?

Hi everyone, I’m selling a SINGER 29K71 on behalf of a retired cobbler. I’m a shoemaker in Australia and I only have used my 29K71 for leather used in shoemaking, probably maximum 3mm thick. A person wants to buy it but they’re asking about the maximum thickness that this machine can stitch. The information I found on the net says 8mm. I tried to stitch two pieces of veg tan leather together (8mm) total and the leather doesn’t even move. The needle is going into the same position all the time. The machine stitches nicely on a lighter weight leather (2mm) but not with 8mm. Can someone’s share their experiences please?

My Tippmann Boss came with a bunch of needles, but only one does not hit the bobbin cover. All but one appear to be too long. Looking to order in more of the correct size, I could see no size marked on the one that didn't strike the cover (unlike the other ones). In the chart in the manual the needle size given for the thread I'm using is "794s Serv 1 230 ...... SM 53-5". I don't understand what all of this means. Is 230 is the size of the eye? What indicates the length? Why did Tippmann supply needles that are too long? Is this a set-up problem? The machine works fine otherwise. thanks

Looking for help to identify this machine I've been fixing up. (Click on any image to enlarge) Serial number: W940XXX Thread take-up lever is nestled between two rails. Enormous bobbin. Just today I finally used up the bonded TEX 200 that came on it. Stitch length and reverse mechanism, my first time seeing this style. If anybody has pictures of what would attach to this to actuate the reverse, do chime in. So far it makes 6.9mm stitches all the time. The hook safety mechanism, also visible in this shot, had been disabled by a glob of solder, but I scraped that out and it's working now. Another view …
