Here is a pictorial tutorial of how Dennis Lane's Equine Profiling Cards work. This system is designed to enable anyone to easily determine the shape of the card that fits correctly at four different places on a horse's back. The numbers can then be communicated to anyone else who has the card system - saddle makers, tree makers, etc. Dennis has used the system well in Australia with his trees, and has now made it available to us in North America. A number of people are trying it out. Dennis doesn't do a lot of on a computer, but has worked with us on this post. He is looking for more saddle makers to test out his system and communicate back how it works for them. He appr…

Has anyone had any experience fitting a tree to a Paso Fino? I have been doing some looking and it seems there is a change in confirmation at 3,5 and 7-8 years old. It is quiet a can on worms to open getting involved in this. The customers complain that even the saddles they buy from Columbia where the horse are from don't fit. They are mostly relying on aussie saddles and english but they sure would like a good western one if it can be made.So does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks, Phil

Every time I try to send email to the address on his site, it comes back as not deliverable. I want to order a set of cards, but also want to know the availability/wait time before I send billing info online. Anyone heard from him lately? Hugh

Following not so hard on the heels of the saddle tree bar tip/shoulder clearance discussion I`d like to begin a thread on breast collar design and attachment points. Acknowledging that use of any particular breast collar will depend amongst other things on the intended riding discipline, terrain, saddle design and personal preferences I'd like to focus this discussion at least for now on western trail riding using quarter horse type and draft crosses. I ride a modified association saddle and use a packer style breast collar with an added over the neck support strap. My breast collar attaches to the saddle via the 7/8 position D cinch ring. Here's a link to the breast c…

Folks, we are looking for some advice and counsel. In 2010 ASMA started the Saddle Fit Project. We have one issue we have not been able to resolve. That being the definition of tree bars. IE: quarter horse bars - semi-quarter horse bars – full quarter horse bars. We have come to the conclusion that these definitions are no longer viable due to mis-use and contradictory information. When we did a GOOGLE search on semi-quarter horse bars we got all types on information. Here are four examples from just the first 2 pages. Semi Quarter Horse bar - This type usually has a gullet width of about 6 1/2 inches. Semi-quarter horse bars: 6" Generally, Semi-QH bars are made for hor…

I have a huge mare I believe needs a draft tree. I have her tracings and pictures to sent to a saddlery but before they go can I get a measurement to help me look for saddles now? I’m not sure where I need to measure across the tracing to get a correct idea of width. Is there a recommendation like two inches vertically from the top? I’m going to add the side picture of her if anyone has any suggestions.

I thought we would share our new website - https://westernsaddlefit.com/ - with the Leatherworker.nt community. We have put together a 67 minute video we call Western Saddle Fit - The Basics and have it for sale on our website. We have footage for a much longer one we will be working on called Western Saddle Fit - Well Beyond The Basics that will hopefully be finished later this year, but we'll see on that. We have a 7 minute video on YouTube called Western Saddle Fit - The Essentials. And we have also compiled and organized a lot of our blog posts about saddle fitting and have a section on our website with links to them: https://westernsaddlefit.com/articles. This is …
