Thanks for the replies. I have never made a cover before and thought it would be a good project to cover my C+R bound book. For those who don't know what that is it is a record book of all Curio and Relic Firearms I buy with my License. I used a National Brand account book. It is 8 3/8 x 10 3/8 got the measurement wrong but it is written on the first page. Standard hard cover record book. As for the design? I am thinking : Curio and Relics FFL 03 bound book placed someway and then some type of design but something easy as I am new to all of this. I was thinking as for the letters to make them of a decent size maybe in a half cyrcle then FFL 03 in a straight line towards the bottom and a picture in the middle? Not sure on the picture. Maybe some type of crossed guns pistols or rifles what ever looks better. Don't have any way of making the picture to print that is one problem. I do have acces to a printer. As far as making the cover there were a few more steps I didn't realize but you have cleared that right up so thank you. Just need to get a printable picture for a pattern to transfer to the leather. I want to make a book cover for my C+R FFL 03 bound book. The book is 8 3/16 wide x 3/4 thick x 10 1/4 high. I have never made a book cover before so this is a first. I was wondering if some one could help me with a design for the cover or maybe someone has made one already? Maybe a pattern I could print out? I would like the design to have C+R ( or Curio and Relic) FFL 03 licence Bound book and then some type of picture? or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. John

1895 Nagant Revolver Drop Leg Holster
johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Ok not sure how to resize these. Only one is big the rest are small. Sorry people just don't know how to do this. John -
Ok finished my first holster not great but here it is. Made from 8-9 oz veg tan leather. I used fiebling's medium brown dye which turned out alot darker then I wanted but oh well. Then added some fiebling's edge kote. Then added some netsfoot oil and sat over night. Then followed up with a couple coats of some Eco-Flo satin sheen. I made alot of mistakes along the way but learned alot to. One being I didn't add a hold down strap. I will only be using this when hunting going from cabin to blind and back. It fits nice and tight right now so it should be fine for what I am using it for. One time a year use. But still the mistake is there. Then not knowing when to stop and leave it alone I added some stamps to it 'big mistake'. where the two stamps are on the bottom left you can see one is a square and the other is like an arrow. I had added another arrow stamp above the square stamp and it double stamped. Well to hide this I flattened that whole area around the two stamps. That did not totaly hide the arrow stamp. So I used a back ground stamp and went over the whole area and that worked to hide it. Then used a corner stamp on both sides of the opening. Of course messed up on that to. The corner that was not part of the stamp hit the leather and made a corner mark. So flattened it as much as I could and laid out the square lines you see where the pistol goes. Worked so so. I would like to say I think I have a new hobby. i really enjoyed working on this project and will try to keep learning what I can. I would like to thank everyone who helped me along the way with my questions and concerns. I am not sure how to add pictures and am going to try to do it. Hope they turn out. I tried to look this up in the search area and nothing came up. I did see a recent post with a link for just that but the link did not work. So here goes.

Ok this will be the first time ever applying a finish coat to leather. I have both Eco-Flo satin and super sheen finishes. I had a question. I am going to use the satin on my first holster. I have read to apply with a damp sponge or with a brush. Then let dry and buff. Can it be applied with a rag?(t-shirt) I tried this on a scrap piece that was dyed already and it seemed to soak in. Would this be another way to do it if the sponge or brush were not available? Like I said I did try this but wanted to know from the pro's. Please let me know what you think. John

Yes that is the type I was looking to make. Except all the ones I have seen were a little differant as the rest part was part of the bottom. The rest on those look sepperated and sewn on to the bottom if that makes any sence. what ever is easier to make I guess. But then again if I wanted easy I could just get a sand bag and be done with it. Thanks for help. john

What is a clicker? John

Particle thanks for the reply. That is differant and not what I was looking for but that is really cool very original. I was looking for the bag type that has the groove in the middle for the gun to rest in. Like the commercial one's. Hard to explain it. I guess you could say it has a U shape at the top of the bag. This only for me for when I go to the range. Have no intention of making anything to sell to people. My leatherworking projects are for me and me only. I find no matter what it is I feel better about having something when I know I made it my self. And I know all of you know what that means. Thank you for adding yours here and maybe someone else may know how the other one's are made. John

I recently bought the large US stamp. These have to be used with a press so you know. They can't be hammered. john

Question About Dying Leather
johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thank you for the replies. I will remember that for my next project. This still came out good but not the color I really wanted but I can live with it. I used a dauber to dye it by the way. I will post pics when done. I will say it is nothing like what I have seen here but it will work for me. Only thing that is bad about it is I could not figure out how to put a strap on it to hold the pistol in the holster. I should have looked it up and incorperated it into the design. Next time I will. Thanks again for the information. John -
I have a question. I recently dyed my first holster a Med Brown with Fiebing's Leather Dye. I made it from 8-9 oz veg tan leather. Instead of it being a Med Brown it ended up dark brown. Is there a reason for this? It looks nice but not the color I wanted. Maybe a step I didn't do or something? If any one knows please let me know. As i said it is the first holster I have made and the first time dying anything. Thank you. john

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could buy an undyed natural belt keeper 1 1/2? I bought one from Tandy and it was junk. Double stapled and staples sticking out the backside. It was junk. So can't use that. Looking for a sewn belt keeper. I have never made one and would really like to buy ne if I could find it. Please let me know. Thank you for looking. John

Burnishing Question

Burnishing Question
johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Particle thank you for your reply. Ok the main body front piece and back piece. On these the only burnishing I have done is the edge of the opening on the front piece. The back piece is taller then the front and I burnished the top of that. The only edges I can't do is the outside edge on front and back until they are put together. I'm going with a med brown. And it is the first time I have ever dyed anything so not use to it have any pointers on that? Let me see if I have this right. First dye it and all parts then glue then sew then bevel edges I couldn't do before then sand then burnish then edge coat and then finish coat and done right? As a top coat or finish coat is super sheen easy to use? I have some and thought that would be good for the finish but have never used it. Thanks for all the help I really do appreciate it. John -
Burnishing Question
johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Hidepounder thank you for the reply. I should have said I am using a hand burnisher from Tandy. And was burnishing the edge on a couple straps of 8-9 veg tan leather. I am only using water to wet the edge. It has come out fine this way except the color thing. It will be dyed so not that inportant but was wondering why this happens. I am working on a drop leg holster for a Nagant revolver I use with me hunting. I have taken pictures threw the setup and when done will post my first real project here. Since I am getting close to dying it I need to know a couple things. First when I dye it should I wype the edge with the dye to? Not sure if I will be using the edge coat or not. Second when I am done dying it and buffing it out I can put the finish coat on then assemble it right? Also if I dye it should I use Neetsfoot oil on it before I put the finish coat on? Or is it not nessasary? Please let me know. Thank you. John -
I have a quick question. I wanted to know when burnishing an edge. Why does some of the leather edge turn brown when burnished and other parts of the edge stays light in color after burnishing the leather? Thank you. John

johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
It's 8-9 oz leather on the original. Had a brain fart on that one!! All I had to do was put a 8-9 oz piece next to it to tell. I would like to know about the US stamp if anyone knows where to find them. John -

johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Tomline thanks for the reply. Those look nice. What thickness leather are the originals 6-7oz? There not 8-9 oz I know that. The body of the holster will be the same right down to the Lift-a-dot fasstner. Not sure how to do the post for it but will read up on it. As far as the shoulder straps. I was hoping to get some advise on. Maybe someone has already done one and can help out. I hope so. Thank you. John
