I think everybody who has ever sewn leather has had this problem. A simple, fast, and cheap way is to buy the white tape that athletes use to tape their wrist, ankles, etc and wrap that around your fingers. Plus that particular tape has a pretty rough surface so it really helps you grip the thread and needle. Hope this helps. -Cord

I've used mulehide for some time now, buddy told me about pigskin so i tried it I think it lasts a little bit longer. If you are guna be doing ranch roping or roping big stuff mama cows, bulls etc. then I definatly recommend it. The point is to be able to slip a little rope at a time. Also, if you are roping off a young horse you can use it as a horn wrap and slip him some rope it helps build their confidence makes em think they are pulling even if they really arn't itl keep them from quitting on you. I think mule hide or pigskin is the way to go and if I had to choose between the two it would be the pigskin.

Greetings from Texas! My name is Cord Eversole I've been seriously working with leather for about four years now, although I dabbled in it a little as a youngster. I started tanning deer hides and making buckskin items and knife sheaths. Later I started working for a ranch that hadd a leather shop in one of the barns and during the winter months and rainy days my time was spent in there teaching myself the trade for the most part. After I learned the basics I bought some books and made some contacts and started learning a little from other people. I make just about anything you can think of out of leather, I completed my first saddle about 2 months ago and am fixing to start on my second. I'm kinda dissapointed that I didn't find this site sooner!!!

Just wondering if anyone knows where to get alligator hide for saddle seats in small quantities. Everywhere I have found to buy it you can only buy a whole hide, being that I don't use very much of it I hate to spend the money on an entire hide. So if anyone knows of a place that will cut a specified amount of gator hide let me know. thanks -Cord

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how you get the look found on a lot of saddles ecspecially with floral patterns, where the flowers and designs look a natural color but the matting and background is black or a darker color, along with the some of the deeper tooling marks. any help would be greatly appriciated. -cord

I am going to be starting on a barrel saddle here pretty soon as soon as the tree comes in the mail. Its the first barrel saddle I have ever built. I was curious if anyone knows how to attach the cantle riser piece to the tree(back piece off of cantle typical of barrel saddles) and cover it, any tips will be helpful. thanks -Cord
