Learn stamping, carving and design tips from master leather artist Al Gould. Al will show how to make your custom guitar strap in floral, basket or geometric stamping around your initials. Class to be held in conjunction with the 12th annual Monterey Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival in Monterey, CA which will be held Dec. 10-12, 2010 at the Monterey Convention Center. untilChan Geer is coming to Tofield, AB, Canada November 25-26-27-28, 2010. The morning of the 25th he will teach several different basket stamping pattern layouts ie: spiral, star burst just to name 2 of the 12 that he teaches. In the afternoon you will lay out and basket stamp your own notebook using the patterns you learned. On 26-27-28 you will learn how to tool, filigree and assemble a self adjusting snap closure notebook. You will lace it up with the 2 tone flat top braid style. untilThis will be a hands on class with five instructors in a class of thirty. Students can expect to be exposed to a variety of styles and techniques over two days of participation. The class is being presented by the Western Folklife Center in Elko. This is an amazing group, well known for their support and promotion of western art and lifestyle. And Elko is a fun town with lots to see and do including the Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the Great Basin Cowboy Gear Show and a number of related trade shows. Course Description: Learn how to draw patterns that show symmetry and balance using a method Al has developed beginning with two basic marks, the “S” and the “C,” the student is taught how to design and properly layout basic patterns. Further instruction involving the components of patterns (the flower, bud leaf, stem and fillers) leads the student into patterns involving more of these components. I used to have the same problem with the black safety skiver Tandy sells. I couldn't get it to cut anything. Then when I started working with a saddle maker, he told me to change the blade. With a new blade it worked great for a while. As soon as the blade gets a little dull, back to not working well at all. He then told me to take out the blade and strop it. Put it back in and it worked as good as a new blade. It can be taken out and stropped and used quite a few times before you have to actually put a new blade in. Might be worth a try with the lace cutter too.

untilFriday August 20th & Saturday August 21st 3-D Embossing class. We will begin between 5:30 - 6:00 pm on Friday evening and then come back on Saturday at 10:00 am to complete this two day project. Each student will learn the techniques of embossing leather and complete a leather Eagle feather with a small Eagle head embossed on the feather, all out of one piece of leather! The finished project looks great when painted and hung in a nice frame! This is an advance class where each person will be required to know how to carve leather and have all the basics down. RSVP in necessary to insure we do not get over booked; class is limited to 6 students. Cost is $40 which includes all materials to make the feather! **Saturday July 31st & August 7th Case Making 1:00 – 3:00. In this 2 part class we will take each person through the steps of making a custom tool case to carry their Craftools in. This project is taken out of Al Stohlmans, “Case Making Volume 1”. This class will meet for 2 consecutive Saturdays in the afternoon. The first class we’ll transfer and cut out our cases. Between the two class dates students can tool their cases at home; tooling will not be taught in this class. The class fee is $25.00 and includes a copy of, “Case Making Vol. 1”, and all the leather and hardware (the wooden tool block is not included). Tool blocks can be made with a 2X4 and a piece of massonite. There may be some available for sale; let us know if you want to purchase a tool block. The cost is usually around $10 for these.
