    Elko Leather Show

    until
The Elko Leather Show will be held July 16-17 at the Elko Convention Center, Elko Nevada. Workshops include braiding with Charlie Lieson and Grant Groves, and carving with Don Butler. Call toll free 888 738 5816 for more info
  2. That really does sound like a great opportunity for people. If I only lived a thousand or so miles closer, I'd jump at the chance!! I took a class from Paul a few years ago and he's a great teacher. If you are looking to improve your skills, you should seriously consider this chance. And as far as classes go, this is a pretty good deal price wise too.
  3. Clay Banyai (that's me) and Jan Schoonover have teamed up to create a series of lessons to teach the art of extreme embossing leather. We're calling them the Sculptured Leather Art lesson series. Lesson #1 in the series is available now from my Badlands Leather Art website. Jan chose a pronghorn antelope to be the subject of this first lesson. All of the lessons in the series will include a tracing pattern, list of tools and materials needed to complete the project, and detailed instructions including color pictures. This first lesson contains 32 pages of instruction and over 120 color photographs. We've chosen to make these lessons available as PDF files downloadable to your computer. Cost of the lessons will be $25 USD, payable through Paypal. We are planning to make a new lesson available every 6-8 weeks. Future lesson subjects will include animals, fish, birds and people and will teach all the techniques Jan uses on his extreme embossed pictures. We'll be starting work on lesson #2 in the series in early June the subject of that lesson will be a black bear. Plans are to have the second lesson available in mid July.

  5. There are a lot of ways to create hair texture. It depends on what kind of look you are going for. Tandy's hair blade in a swivel knife is an easy way to create hair. X-acto knife blades in a handle of some sort can be used in a similar manner and will make deeper impressions than the Tandy hair blade. Some people just draw hair texture onto a carving with a needle or sewing awl, or even a modeling tool. Whatever you decide to use, the important thing in making your hair look realitic is to make sure you pay attention to hair direction and length. Study pictures of your subject to get an idea of what the hair should look like.
  6. Hi Gisela, It looks like you did it better than me! Nice job.
  7. It has a lot of similarities, maybe an updated version of the knife I have?? Hard to say if it was made by the same company. I would guess that when people started using swivel knives, there were those that were always trying to improve upon what was available. They still are! Your's is an interesting knife, and I'd hang onto it if I was you. Thanks for posting the pictures of it. Maybe someone will come along that can tell us more about it.

    3D Aspect

I think one of the keys to getting a 3-D look to your work is to learn to vary the depth of your cuts and your tooling. Take your leaf for example. It looks like you have cut and beveled the center vein the same depth as the border of the leaf. By tooling it to that depth, it makes the vein look like it is setting on top of the leaf instead of being a part of the leaf. If you would have cut the center vein shallower, then beveled it lightly, it would give it a more realistic appearance, IMO. A really good place to go for basic tooling information is Paul Burnett's Painting Cow website. Check out the free lessons he offers. There is a LOT of info there to get you off on the right track.
  10. Just a reminder that there is still time to sign up for this class. It will be a great opportunity for people out east to get a chance to learn from a master. This could very possibly be the last time Jan will be traveling to that part of the country, so don't pass up the chance if you are interested in learning some of his techniques for extreme embossing.
  11. Wayne Christenson of Standing Bears Leather out in California has a couple tattoos that look like carved leather. You can see them in this old thread You might contact him and see if he could help you out. He's standingbears here on the forum.

  13. I just wanted to remind anyone that might be considering entering the World Leather Debut in Sheridan that the deadline for entering it TOMORROW, May 6 at 5:00pm CST. All the details for entering can be found here.
  14. I've got the swivel knife that my grandfather used when he was carving leather. I didn't see one like it in any of the pictures in the article. The blade and barrel are all one piece of metal and it's got a rubber grip. I've got the catalog he used when he ordered his leather tools that show a picture of this knife in it. The catalog is from Leather Products CO., Souix Falls, So. Dak. The knife is listed as "500. Junior Swivel Cutter. A smaller cutter with rubber gip. Excellent for ladies or youngsters." There is no date on the catalog but I'd guess it was probably from the early '50's.

    Adding color

This is a great piece of carving! I love the way you carved the flames. That's one of those carvings that would look great natural colored, but looks even better with color. Nice Job!!
