Very Nice. What do you sew with and how do you sew. I have noticed it before on your seats..... your sewing is very distinctive.

Bill... How long does the linen last? At least from what you have seen..... I recieved advice on not using the linen before because of the wear issue. I still use it however, because I tried nylon and didnt like it. I didnt like poly either.

Business card holder
joel_in_bhm replied to SmilinJim's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Wow... this one is much better than the other one, Jimmy. I dont know why I think that though. Perhaps it was the coloring. Perhaps it was the tiger. Or... just maybe I have a preference for elephants and crimson. Roll Tide. -
I used CD's when I first started. I found they make a nice template to make a circle. I have cut into the edge a couple of times, but I love the fact that they are thin and I have so many.

Here are two purses I have made. They are the only photos I have of my work right now. The brown purse was the second purse I made (the first was a tandy kit). The black purse was the fourth purse I made. But it was the first with what I call a drop in liner. (that didnt work out so well. Both were pretty much made up as I went. They were hand stitched with linen thread. Neither had any stampings or carvings.

Some of my work
joel_in_bhm replied to abn's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Cool. It looks very nice. I like the clean lines and partial stitching on the exterior. Its gives it a very unique look. Was that your first one? Where did you get the pattern or idea? or was it through trial and error? Sorry to ask soo many questions.... -
Some of my work
joel_in_bhm replied to abn's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
How do you seperate the little pockets? I ask, because it appears that there is no seperation between where the credit cards go in the slots that you have cut. If there is seperation, how do you get it there? If there isnt seperation, how does it work with the cards butting against each other? Oh.... and very nice work. -
Leather finishes
joel_in_bhm replied to abn's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Thanks.... I was worried because I read something that said it was not a true finish. But, with what you said and people using just neutral wax, I think I will try Balm and some neutral wax. -
Leather inlay folio kit
joel_in_bhm replied to pepin1948's topic in Books, Journals and Photo Albums
I saw one of those folios in my local tandy store a few months back. The manager made some design on the circle of leather and put it on display. I thought it was a very nice looking project. I went back to the store thursday (11/30), and I noticed the circle was pulling away from the folio. I dont know how he put it on and dont have an abundance of faith in his skills, but it turned me off to the folio. I hope yours turns out better. -
Leather finishes

I just started experimenting with Fiebing's Leather Balm with Atom Wax. So far, I love the results. Anyone have any information good or bad about this product? I dont know exactly what it does, but it says that its a finish albiet not waterproof. I dont want to make something and finish it with Leather Balm with Atom Wax and turn and inferior peice over to someone. thanks.... -
Strap for my laptop case

Did you ever solve this problem? -
I havent tried too many types of edging. I havent tried bee's wax or gum-trag. Although I do have both. I get the edges even and then apply edge kote. I dont really like edge kote, because it has remained tacky on some projects. But it does cover and is quick and easy. I am not really looking for easy though, I would work twice as hard on the edges as I would on anything else if I could get a nice edge. I really like the hand sewing, but the edges sometimes leave alot to be desired. I am hoping to find a way to make them acceptable in my book. And I do understand that not all techniques are going to work on different materials.

Hey. I am Joel. I am from Birmingham, Alabama. I have been working with leather off and on for a little while. I did a few things while growing up, but have recently, about the start of the year, started getting serious about it. I heard about this place from Dave Anderson. I have looked around a little bit and I like what I see. I hope I can contribute, and I know I will learn alot. Joel.
