I decided I needed another new log book. So using a few suggestions I received here from my last project i made a new one. I have a lot to learn and I will never be great at knife work but I did enjoy making this. This is hand sewn with a deerskin l lining. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tim

Thank you for the suggestions. The lining was an after thought as I progressed, I already had the pockets glued on at that point. I hand stitched the cover, no machine at my house to play with. Felt like I should be able to stay straighter but still had a hard time of it. The color of the thread was a personal choice, even my wife questioned me on that one. And you are right, a magnetic closer might be easier but I kinda liked the idea of the deerskin ties. Thanks for your thoughts, I may learn something yet. Tim

I thought I would make a new log book cover for my truck driving. I did not do much carving because I was afraid I would not like the results and did not want to practice on this item. The sewing was not as good as I would like but these things take time I guess, gonna just keep on practicing. The outside is veg. tan and the lining is deerskin. Any thoughts on what I could do better would be welcome. Thanks, Tim

Hi, I know very little of leatherwork but since you have had no answers I will jump in. There seem to be a wide variety of books and DVD's that can be found on the net, I myself am trying to learn from books and reading all I can on this site and anyplace else on the web I can find info. As far as a program, I assume you mean a computer program I do not know of any but I have not looked. Good luck, Tim

So tell me, how well did it work? I was trying to sharpen mine freehand and had a very hard time. I have the same Smith kit tucked away in a drawer and just may try this. Tim

Thanks Moe, I purchased the hoop. Seems to be a lot of places that sell them on the net. I did not think I could make the frame and I did not want to waste the skin.

I get about one project a weekend done due to driving truck for a living and being gone all week. I happened to win a piece of Goatskin from Siegal of California a few weeks back, was one of the first seven callers. They mentioned using Goatskin for drum heads so I decided to make a drum. I am no artist so please excuse the rough painting but I am pleased with it. It has a very loud and deep sound to it so it will give the grandkids something to bang on when they come over. Tim

Thanks guys, the wing nut may get tiring but it does work. I may change things later but for now it clamps down tight which is what I want. The legs should be a bit wider and maybe slanted but I could not figure out how to go about that so I went with what I could. It does feel steady when sitting on it and working, I did my first hand stitching on it and everything went very well. I may try something different later but for now I really want to get back to leather. Tim

I wanted to learn to hand sew instead of using a sewing awl and found I needed something to hold the leather with. At first I thought I could buy myself a stitching horse but found a limited selection and high cost and so I decided to make one. It is made of Oak, the seat being two pieces of 1" board glued together because I could not find a 2" board. This was made during three consecutive since I drive truck and am home only on weekends. This is also a first attempt at making anything with wood. Please tell me what I could have done to make it better if anything. Thanks.

I looked at the Tandy round knives and found them to feel very cheap. Very thin and........well they just don't feel good to me. I bought an old Clyde round knife from Bruce Johnson here on the forum and the quality is very good. Feels like a very nice knife. The two are worlds apart and I would stay away from cheap stainless steel knives. Just my opinion of course. Tim

Hi folks, this is a sheath I made over the weekend. I just recently started trying to work with leather and would love some tips on improving. This is my third fixed blade sheath, my first attempt was to make a formed leather sheath for a pocket knife that turned out better than I thought it would. Thanks for looking.

Hello all, I am new to leatherwork . I recently decided to make a sheath for a knife I have and did a very Nasty job on it ! So I bought a small bit of tools and started over, better this time and since then I have been trying to improve. I find this a great and fun hobby to work on when I get home on weekends from my job as a truck driver, gone from Sunday afternoons until Friday nights so I really do not have a lot of time. Still I want to improve and am hoping to find resource's here to improve. Darkbeer
