  1. I have a good used reined cow horse saddle an old saddle making friend made some years back. I want to remove the latigo lining on the fenders. I figure I can cut the stitching (nylon) with a scapel, but wondering just how hard will it be to pull the latigo liner off, glued on no doubt with the best of glue!!! It is a using saddle and not worried about the remaining stitching holes! Thanks
  2. what is involved with replacing a horn on a cutter that had been cut off? thanks
  3. thanks for the repl;y. thats about what i figured. Bill
  4. got a pair of oak w/ galvanize metal cover to be here in a few days. thinking i want to cover with rawhide. i guess make template out of paper in two parts? i do know rawhide will be soaked. what should use to lace? any other help will be much appreciated.
  5. well what i did was simply make a round hole on the flap, sewed a rounfd piece of rawhide to encircle the hole, made a piece of latigo for string to go thru the hole and put one overhand know it it to fasten. i don't have a snap setter and don't recall how i put them on the belt i made?? must be gettin old!???
  6. any ideas for latch for flap on hoof pick holder. O K i admit a simple snap would be less anal. want some simple and little different. appreciate any help. BILL
  7. trust me few people are broker than myself. just saying with a $25 tax number, give yourself a name, ie joe's leather works, a person can go shop on line for suppliers...., example, wickett and craig showed overstock on quality bellies for $9 each thats what about $1.20 per ft?? lots of items can be made out of good skirtin bellies. i have to shop because i can't and won't support inflated prices if i can help it, i realize everyone in business has to make a profit but..................... BILL
  8. tandy pricing?????? i'm gonna open a gas station, my price on gas will be $20 per gal. pay me a $35 membership and your price will be $18 per gal. i will have monthly sales, gas then will be $19.50 per gal on sorry crap gas with water in it. if you pay the membership and buy $2,000 worth of gas per year i figure you will save $1000 per year, thus saving many dollars over the cost of the membership! also i am selling stock to my new company, any investors out there????? i better watch out, i might get banned here? sorry Tandy. old and ornery, BILL
  9. i have found that with a state tax number a dealer price is usually pretty easy to get unless like you say ya ina protected area. you might check with " u braid" they supply the supples to makers, and if you don't want to make the halter yourself, i', sure they can supply a huge list of people glad to sell to you and hopefully at wholesale price. two other people and myself went together and coop. i have the tax number, get on te computer and do the leg work to obtain companies to fulfill our needs ( sounds kinda erotic but it ain't! LOL). wickett and crain, weaver, several high end felt pad co, nettles stirriups, eyc etc, i don;t care if a person is a "hobbist" or what, it irritates me to see what tandy and others charge for most of their stuff, yea their prices are a joke. my $02 worth, but with the devalue of the dollar its worth maybe 1 peso or 1/2 euro! LOL BILL
  10. thanks for the reply, i figured i could do that but i never had that problem before. BILL
  11. can i take a wood galvanized metal covered blank and tighten the bolt to get neck down to 2 1/2 in size from the standard 3 inches ?? thanks BILL
  12. i agree with watching for their "sales", but after dealing with them and another local supplier, i found basically that their "retail" price is actuallu like 50% higher than actual retail and their club price or price with tax numer is a bout "normal" retail. pretty disgusting, its hard to compare quality of leather and therefore their price, check out their prices on say a basic item like pure neatsfoot oil and then see what you can buy it for anywhere else! i would look at checking on over stocked leather like at wicket and craig for instance. also this foreign crab leather isn't worth buying, (in my humble opinion) just like sorry chinese tools and hardware. BILL
  13. without standing on a political soapbox might i just say::: i think all items for sale, be it a saddle, pad, bit, etc etc, the seller and or maker should STATE what it is made of!!!! then the buyer can make a decision (informed) as to what we are puttin our money in. i realize at my age good tack will outlast me but i hate CRAP!! i realize the strickly hobby rider might choose to buy on price and probably that decision comes also from not having a good knowlege of the difference between quality and Chinese CRAP! ALSO, please write me in for some political office (any) that will pay me a stupid salary !! LOL BILL
  14. yep, the dog that bit me. i have to wonder if a store's retail price for a gal of neatsfoot oil is $33 and their so called wolesale price is like $28 and i can buy it anywhere else retail for that and cheaper, i have to wonder how they price everything else????kinda like the store that marked everythin UP for their sale so they can mark it DOWN when the sale starts !?? thanks for your reply, BILL
  15. i'm mainly a bit, spur, buckle maker as far as my piddly crafts go, but i still ride and train some ( at my age i call it pidly also). i do have a tax number but llookng for supplier of quality felt working pads, i want to go to the source. i have a pad made by diamond that is nice quality, i can't afford a 5 star at saddle shop and don't want one of their "on sale" pads marked down to $85 from $110 that has the feel of sandpaper and cacus! yes i'm consevative ( not a wealthy man) and tired and gettin it stuck to me everywhere ya go, leather store, gas station, grocery store. etc thanks BILL
  16. not sure where to post this so i'll put it here. i do some handmade bit, spur, and buckle work. i make a few spur straps mainly for place to put some buckles on to sell on. i live in MIssouri, have a tax number, and have been buying my piddly amount of tools and leather at one of two local suppliers. here's my itch: i need ed a gallon of pure neatsfoot so i go to store A. price is $34 but with my discount, i pay $28. (they are wonderful people) about the same deal at store B. i can go to local saddle/western store and buy it for $26. yes, their retails price. HA! i can order it thry Valley Vet for $17 but ya got shipping, anywaaaaay. where can i go to buy my piddly amount of skirting, liner leather, , oil, hardware ( sorry, but i don't want any sorry Chineese crap), etc???? i make a few chaps and chinks, too, it would be nice to buy wholesale and get treated fairly, and get all hopefully at one place,,, ANYONE CAN HELP or have suggestions ???????????????? thanks BILL
  17. i admit i probably over oil. but i hate leather that s begging for oil or leather that is trying to crack! i've had saddles for decades that i overoiled. saddle soap and leather new is sure cheaper that neatsfoot oil anyway!! BILL
  18. thanks for the reply. thats what i thought. i got off track because i was reading where dennis mooreland uses compound, he makes some really high quality using gear, so i was confused. i live way out in the sticks, last time i was i springfield i was in "djdjjdjjdjdjjfhf" leather store and asked for pure neatsfood and she gives me compound and i didn't notice. thanks BILL p s. do you know what they put in the Lexol products??
  19. i've always used pure neatsfoot on all my saddles and tack, i realize comound has some other "additives", but which is bewtter for new or older leather, pure or compound? thanks BILL
  20. i live in southwest missouri. looking got bst source for top quality heavy harness leather, just the plain russet color like is used to make the good reins. i want to make single ply hadstalls 10-12 oz . tandy doesn't even carry any and springfield leather had nothin usable. i guess i'm lookin for the souce that saddle makers use. i assume i need to look for the distributor that handles herman oak and will fool with the little guy and send me what i need. ????? thanks BILL
  21. thanks for the reply. i have some really thin horse hide, it seems awful tuff. its cheap. that should work???? latigo is expensive and there in sprinfield( MO) they only have thick hides of latigo. . i mainly bought that hide of skirting for spur straps. i have some straps made ouit of 12 -14 oz shirting that i have had used for years, and are in good shape ( but then i probably over oil my stuff) of course leather on horses face is subject to sweat. i'm gonna line headstall with the horsehide unless i find out not to. thanks again for the info. we could trade some ozark rocks for flint hill rocks? BILL
  22. i have side of 12 oz skirting, probablt 10 oz toward bottom, Question: is this good for headstalls and not lining it???? i will oil it good. any help appreciated, BILL
