  1. Holy Crap, I put waaaaay to much oil on this thing. It's so dark it looks like I have already stained it. Is there anyway to recover? Anyone cound a way to draw oil out of it? Dry it out basically......
  2. Thanks Bruce, all of my leather at the moment is from tandy. However I have been chomping at the bit to take a look at some other tanneries when my stock is low. Right now I am working on a motorcycle seat for a friend. I'm using a 6-7 oz hide. It's very dry now that I'm done with it. I applied a few light coats and it appears pretty splotchy at the moment. I will give a night to soak in and see what it looks like in the morning. It darkened down quite a bit, so I am hoping that it lightens back up as it dries. Thanks for your time. Craig
  3. try harborfreight.com for a low buck lathe
  4. If you don't mind me asking, what did you give for the machine? I am looking at one that is the head only, no table or motor.... Just curious
  5. Good questions Bobby, I was looking at doing the same for my crew. I think the engraved plastic idea from dwight is great for mass production of them. But otherwise, I like the idea of all tooled leather key fob better. REAVES: I was looking through your website, Good looking stuff man. I like what you did with the back plate on your bunker gear suspenders.
  6. This place is such a plethora of good info! Thanks for putting that together, really well done. I realized why my toolings kept losing some of their depth, too much "casing" with a sponge as I work it. I will be experimenting with this method on my next project.

    Stropping

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate the info. Don't have any Murphy's. Would EVOO or Lexol work? Would one be prefered over the other?

    Stropping

I have looked around and can't seen to find an answer. can I reuse my leather strop? One it's dirty can it be effectively cleaned and re used? Also, I saw a write up recently where someone recommended using a dense card board to strop instead of leather. Any thoughts on this?
  10. How much is enough? Can you describe the desired results I am looking for? I have been working with leather fpr several years now, self taught. And this is one area I am realizing I was WAY off on. In an effort to elevate my game I am working on refining my finishing work at the moment. I am using hides from tandy and after tooling one, I tried using EVOO. I put on a fairly liberal coat and it soaked it up pretty quick. The leather has only softened marginally, it's still pretty stiff. Its about a 12 oz leather so its very thick, I am assuming this comes into play with how much of the oil will be required too.

What did you use to burnish the edges on these? It looks really good!
  12. Hey brother, Saw one of your posts and noticed you were from lubbock. I work for a small department in the suburbs of Dallas, but my cousin retired from Lubbock a few years ago, Freddy Turney. Know him?

    Custom Stamp

Looking for a stamp to create a diamond plate pattern. Know of anyone that is already manufacturing one? If not where could I find someone to make me one? I want a stamp that allows the pattern to stand up like real diamond plate would. 15. Hey Everyone, My name is Craig and I have been working with leather for about 5 or 6 years off an on. I have recently tried to get back at it and was looking for some guidance on a particular project when I found the forums. I am excited to pick your brains, learn some new techniques, figure out where I have gone wrong on old ones, and just generally improve on my skills.
