I am going to make myself a pair of suspenders for my firefighter gear and also a radio strap (which is essentially a belt over my gear). I am debating using bridle vs latigo as I’ve heard these are the best. There is also harness and skirting if someone feels those are best. Anyone have a recommendation? It’s been hard to find the difference in these. v

Some leathers are supple and some are stiff. Which leather would I need to make a thick leather belt (single piece)? I have a side of 15oz Herman oak and it is way too stiff. Is there a way to make my current leather supple for a belt? If this has already been answered can somebody point me in the right direction Vinny

Thanks for the tip.. I've read on here a few people endorse the Barry king mauls..these are half the price of the Stohlman. Wonder if anyone has owned both.

I received this as a gift for Christmas. Is this a solid tool or should I exchange ? I don't really have the opportunity to try different ones out. Just want to buy a solid one as my cheap starter mallet has run its course.. It will mainly be used for tooling and letter stamps.

Looks good..don't worry about buying too many tools for one shield...you will end up making yourself a half dozen more shields..plus your buddies will want one too..keep it up..how did you get the texture look in the black ?

Thanks, yeah those were gifts that weren't being put in service. It is a single piece about a 1/4 inch. I use acrylic paint with a sheen finish..I want to try out angelus soon.

Haven't posted in years.. Hope all are well.. Honest feedback would be appreciated.

I use acrylic paints and finish with super sheen. My helmet shield has seen a lot of fire and is holding up fine.

The banners and the large numbers are free hand. I draw my design on with a metal stylus then use a swivel knife followed by a beveler. The letters on top and bottom are stencils. This was 2 months after I had started making shields and a lot has changed since then. Its a short but difficult road to get better. Its a long and difficult road to get really good. Just message me with any questions and I will help you as best I can Vinny
